Thats Because 75% of Landrovers are not good enough to go Offroad!!
I tell ya what mjw1999 I'll have a tug o war with ya any day mate, you bring the rope n i'll bring the beer!!
Like THIS HERE you mean!
Thats exactly why 75% stay on the road
I would gladly meet you half way to show you, but i would not have enough confidence in a disco making it that far without breaking down.
Now now boys, you'll be hitting each other with your handbags next!!!!

The reason I changed my old 6YO Landcruiser - I was able to buy a NEW LC3.
My first LC Colorado [3.0 TD Auto] was a used car 3YO which I ran for another 3 years and it was faultless, I did not have a single problem. This gave me confidence to buy a new LC3 [3.0 D-4D Auto] which I still have - now with 50,000 miles to date.
The Australians are very particular about 4x4 vehicles and their reliability. You won't find many Discos down under, a Landcruiser is favourite. So my Aussie brother-in-law tells me.
mjw1999 - wonderful ads for our vehicle - keep em coming.
Hi Bowler70, I think their both great vehicles really!, I just happen to be a Land Rover Nut!!! ......... I think the Aussie thing has got to do with their extortionate luxury car tax, its very high! so makes importing them very very expensive..
The Disco and LC are both good cars but for some reason the Toyota doesn't appeal to me, I'm more likely to go for an X5.
The LR does everything I want, it's just that reliability black cloud that's holding me back, there are issues with the Disco as with any car so it's finding if there's enough to put me off and as I'm buying new if those problems still affect the latest D4.
What is nice to see in this thread is there are happy owners of both Landrover and Toyota. It makes a good change from the usual threads about people being upset and unhappy with their purchase.
As for the Disco4, It may be too early to tell, but i have read that things have improved, how much who knows! If it were a choice between disco4 and a BM, then i would go for the disco as i prefer a proper 4x4 rather than a road car.
Obzi, you don't really say much about what your needs for the vehicle are?
If you could be a little more specific then people may be able to give better advice!
I need a car with space, flexibility, 4wd, I want the ability to carry at least 6, some off road capability, good motor cruiser, I'd quite like a badge, something that will tow, pull, push, ha ha, in fact it's perfect, the Discovery for me right now is perfect.
And that's what makes this so damn frustrating after spending a long time looking, checking websites, reviews, tests, in fact I've never bought a vehicle that so fits exactly what I want. The tales of reliability problems were just holding me back and I just need some feedback from owners rather than the Dealers who to be fair to them are just trying to sell you one..
I just wanted to build a mental picture of where things are and if the issues are few or small enough for me to still go for it. No matter how right the Discovery is for me I would still walk away if I heard it was riddled with problems and a reliability nightmare. So far I'm hearing it's maybe not the most reliable car on the market but maybe not quite as bad as older models and certainly not the worst.
A work colleague of mine has a new Discovery 4 XS? Middle range model with the 3.0L (twin?) turbo engine and air suspension. He's only travelled 3,000 miles in a year as he uses it for towing primarily but he is astounded by its performance. Brings a grin to his face every time he hitches up and lugs his 1700Kgs twin-axle.
For me the jury is still out. Is it too early for the blemishes to have been ironed out of the 'new' 3.0l lump when coupled with the Disco 4 gearbox etc?
Its all academic anyway as the Disco 4 is out of our price range; but a reasonable Disco 3 is within our budget. I'd prefer a Disco (3 or 4) over a Range Rover due to the load lugging practicalities but I've also got an eager eye on a Ford Excursion!
Hard facts:
Disco 3, 2007MY automatic towing 1900 kg Hymer over now 13,320 miles towed, is now averaging over all these miles 20.62 mpg [indicated from in-car computer zeroed for each trip]. Generally towing at the legal limit where safe to do so. Total mileage 26,300.
I would expect the Disco 4 with its sequential turbo charging to be better.
