Now I use the mover but before I either used the tow rope or pinched a 4x4. I have the yellow grip mats which are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard really. Would love a 4X4 but can't afford one sadly.

its much easier to get the car off without the van then put the rope on to pull the van off, i have those yellow mats not tried them yet

If you can reverse until you are facing across the hill rather than up it and then drive up at a more acute angle, the incline is less of an issue.
I Changed to a 4x4 a few years ago as I was sick of getting stuck in muddy pitches, but at under 20mpg, £80 a tyre and £215 road tax, I just changed to a Mondeo. I have seen a few Discoveries stuck in mud and a Mondeo just drive round them in the past!
If I do get stuck, I have the mover on the caravan to assist.
this 4x4 argument will rage forever, Its really a lifestyle thing. I choose not to use one as I think they are more expensive to run and when I park next to one in the supermarket car park I think to myself thank heaven I don't have to drag that huge thing around town.
Others choose to accept the costs for a certain style of vehicle regardless of needing 4wd or not. Same as some people choose to drive a ferrari. They don't need the 180mph capability but like the style of vehicle.

Don't get me started on the carbon output. All petrol/oil based vehicles are only on the planet for a breif moment in time.
