I can get a good deal on a Vauxhall Antara 2.2 CDTi, ex demo 2012 model. Decent mpg. Anyone any thoughts on this? We already have a Vauxhall Astra and have found it very reliable, I know it's not everyones cup of tea! I have done a search but couldn't find much about it on the forum
Posted earlier re Chevvy Captiva which is basically the same
In the latest edition(Feb 2013) of Practical Caravan they have a report on the Chevvy Captiva 2.2VCDi, manual
Kerbweight given as 1878kgs Towing limit 2000kgs, NW 80kgs. They have had the car for 6 months and covered 15,000 miles in it, 4000 of which were towing all over the UK and Europe. Av MPG whilst towing a fully loaded 2009 Sprite Major 6 which gave a 76% match (1430 kgs approx) was 23.1
The conclusion was that the Capiva is a great tow car, but has no spare wheel, regularly obtain 40mpg solo. Also tester commented that it is more impressive as a tow car than being driven solo.
A reader with an auto Captiva reported that driven solo MPG was only around 25, no figures given for towing with an auto
I've seen new Antara's advertised in our local paper well within your 20K budget, as your van is quite heavy it rules out many cars so perhaps the Antara or other similar SUVs(Captiva, Hyundai ix35 or Kia Sportage) would be worth a look, you should have a very good choice with £20,000.
Hi we have a brand new Antara 4 month old (2.2 CDTI FWD), and will be towing at easter. I consider it after 4 months one of the nicest car i have ever driven. ( I drove a 2.2 Honda crv last summer from Machester to Glasgow and back (solo), and hated every minute of it (road noise etc), however i find the Antara quite as a mouse, comfy and has a spacious cabin, the down sides being the fuel consumption, i get approx 32 - 38 mpg driving to and from work 20 miles on the motorway , whilst approx 25 - 30 mpg around town short journeys, so god only knows what's in store when i have the van (1300kgs Loaded) on the back. The boot is not very big and we don't have a spare tyre!!. bit under the boot floor is ample room for other odds and sods.
Other than that its a great car, and not many of them about although i am beginning to see more recently.
hope this helps

Thanks, that is reassuring as we put down a deposit yesterday. We had a test drive and were very impressed. Didn't know about lack of spare tyre though!!!

Vx Antara have a high depreciation unlike the Honda CRV which incidently holds its value . Late Second hand examples can be had cheap as there not that popular.

Thanks everyone. We don't mind about depreciation as we usually keep our cars for about 10 years, annual mileage < 10,000 on each car. We went for a brand new Antara for the 0% finance and ten years/100,000 miles warranty. We paid a sneeze over £18,000 for a brand new 2.2 diesel AWD.
We saw cheaper on the Internet but 3 month wait and I can't get my 'van until I get the tow car!!!!

On a side note about the anatara, We got our towbar from PF Jones in Manchester £118.00 Inc Va (cheapest i could find) and Dedicated electrics from Right Connections (whom Make them) See internet. £56.00 Inc vat (we dont have double electrics just single for the lights etc). Its a doodle to fit no cutting welding or anything, Approx 6-8 bolts either side, and plug the module in underneath as they all come with trailer electrics, and its done. We were quotes £325.00 fitted, but we did it out selves in an hour. Oh and it does not effect the parking sensors with the tow bar fitted, and i cannot remember if is disables them when connected to the van but will find our in four weeks.
Enjoy the car.
