this post is the kerb weight of the car in the context of a recommended outfit match being 85% of the cars unlaiden kerb weight. any additional weight due to payload and weight of the occupants is a bonus. indeed putting the awning in the boot of my car makes it more sure footed when towing and i am only towing at 73% MPLM to kerb weight (without fuel and driver) . the max towing weight of the car is irrelevant in the context of outfit matching if that max weight is higher than the cars kerb weight. hell i could tow a 2 tonne caravan if that were the case but the reality is i am limited to 1488 at 85%. but as i understand its illegal to tow at greater than 100%. it is dangerous to show that max tow weight in some cases. my german collague wants to buy a caravan for transporting motorbikes in a Fendt trnasporter. he though his limit was 2000kg because thats what his passats manual says. i pointed out that in the uk at least 100% the kerb weight is the case which is less than 1500kg in his case. and his transporter caravan is MPLM 1500kg. however knowing what bikes he has its unlikely he would load it that much but the guide is MPLM must be 85% (or at least less than) the kerb weight. unless i am incorrect of course.

Indeed towing a large white un-aerodynamic box at 60mph in potentially is very different to towing a low trailer round some country lanes for instance at slow speed
All the manufacturers have to do is specify what their car will safely pull away towing on a certain gradient and that is all it means

It is not illegal to tow at 100% or greater, as long as it is the weight as shown on the chassis plate.
Discovery 2 is rated for 3500kg towed weight, it's running weight loaded is around 2450kg.
Peter a family hatchback and a Dicovery are 2 very different beast, whilst its not illegal to tow above the cars kerbweight it's certainly not adviseable.
My cars kerbweight is 1705 kgs and max tow limit of 2000kgs, to tow a car at 300kg above the cars kerbweight would be plain stupid

Bob the car is a new shape 15 plate car, it's a hire car so no choice over engine size i took the details from the hire agreement it could of been 110 bhp but 100% wasn't 120.
As for kerbweights being irelevant thats a matter of opinion, most cars for many years have a max tow weight well above the cars kerbweight.
Bessie
If it only had a hatch it was the new one , but I would imagine it was the mark 2 as the new one is only just being shown at the sales rooms, the mark 2 has a boot and hatch combined
