I tow a coachman amara 570/6 with a Mitsubishi Outlander 2.3 di-d gx4.
I always leave it in 4wd auto. The drive to the rear wheels only kicks in when it senses the front wheels are losing traction. You can definitely tell when my sons have switched it to 2wd as you suddenly get under steer on roundabouts etc. with the AWD system it really sticks to the road like glue. One of the impressive things about the outlander. My amara is 1600kg MPLM and the outlander pulls it no problem although it does slow it down somewhat. Goes like the clappers solo. I get 21mpg towing to the southwest and 25 returning. I put this down to the traffic conditions being start stop on a Friday afternoon and relatively constant on a Sunday or Monday. I thought that 4wd lock was only to be used on snow, ice or mud because using it on dry Tarmac wore out the universal joints and other components on the rear axle.

Interesting thing about the outlander. The max gross weight is 2410 and its MIS is 1835. So that means it's max payload is 575kg. The gross train weight is 4510kg but it's max tow is 2000kg so you could tow to the max and load the car to the max without exceeding the GTW. I believe some cars max tow and max gross weight exceed the gross train weight so a compromise must be made between caravan weight and what you carry in the car. How do outlander carrying capacity figures compare to other cars like the octavia?

2012 Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4 has a payload of 600kg.
MIS 1,495kg, GVW 2,095kg, GTW 3,695kg, tow limit 1,600kg.
However, in reality the weight of the towbar, optional steel spare wheel, roof bars, 2 cycle carriers and 75kg noseweight are to be included in the payload (easy forgotten by some people) so it leaves around 460kg for actual load to carry.
Haldex is a very good system, 90% power to front and 10% to rear wheels in normal running, it sorts it's self out, more power to rear wheels as and when needed, just turn traction control off in mud, snow and loose gravel.
