Hi mjcreed, we have a navara and it does tow well, that well that one of our lads didn't even notice a puncure on a trailer, But that can be said for a lot of 4x4's, we do think it's a bit thirsty though and the roof is low as you get in, Well i seem to crack my head very easily

Hi andyparker that'd be good and the one advantage my frontera will have there is that the beer will be cold because it has a tabletop fridge in the back when we rally.

Rab, As I understand it yours is the later model  and has the more powerfull engine, I havn't really towed our caravan any distance yet to check mpg whilst towing but i was hoping to get around 25mpg , have just done around 390 miles mixed use and seem to have averaged about 30mpg but only about 60- 70 miles of that was towing so quite happy with that performance............mark

Hi all, merry christmas.  I have only recently started caravanning and am towing with my Toyota Hi-Lux, UK model pick up.  I'm self employed and this is my work vehicle so not bought purely for towing.  As I have limited experience, I have nothing to compare its performance to but it does seem sluggish.  The 2.4 td engine struggles with the slightest of inclines and gear change is required well in advance to keep those revs up.  The caravan weighs a total of about 1250kg so doesn't seem excessive.

Last time we were out, a hill of about half a mile made the temperature gauge go right up to the base of the red..........very concerning.  It takes the joy out of towing with a constant worry of hills!

The noseweight is pretty spot on, 90Kg, but feels quite bouncy.

My question to you all is "is this just towing or am I experiencing a poor towing vehicle?"

Many Thanks

Hi Dazwilliams, Your toyota should be up to the job, But this would depend on a few factors, How old is the car and what mileage, Has it been serviced on a regular basis, And does it suffer from any other high temps. solo? the weight you are pulling is nothing for that motor really and with it getting that hot its obviously struggling for some reason, Obviouly you will notice some performance drop off when towing but not that makes it uncomfortable to tow. the fact that its struggling suggests a problem somewhere that would need further investigation as it shouldn't be struggling that much on hills.

Unless the handbrakes still on or the legs are down on your van.

Hi Rabb, the Toyota is a 2001 with 120000 miles.  It has full service history and never has temperature problems.  It surprised me that it struggles but as I said, I have no experience to compare the performance to.

It just dies in 4th and sometimes 3rd, resulting in 2nd gear for lots of inclines.

Very recently had oil, filter and air filter change.  Just wondering if new fuel filter would help?

I'm glad you are surprised too as it gives me hope that it may not be the car itself.  A glimmer of hope.

Thanks

Hi daz, 120000 mls is not excessive for a well serviced diesel ,If it's not had a fuel filter lately its the cheapest option to try, We change them on ours about every 5000, This is a bit low but for the price it seems to help. Having to go down to 2nd and 3rd unless its a long steep hill is a bit worrying, Does it smoke? and can you tell if the turbo is working?

No smoke, apart from a little diesel and not sure how to check the turbo.  It has a slight whistle, very slight so it sounds like its working.

Thanks for suggestions.

You can normally fel the turbo' come in' between 2-3000 revs another thats easy to check and wouldn't help is engine breather pipes are not clogged.

Hi, The turbo must be working as there is a definite improvement in power at exactly 2000 revs, will check the breather pipes though.  Thanks again
