We have a renault grand scenic 1.6 petrol. We have recently bought a Bailey Pageant Auvergne 2002, which the dealer says has an MTPLM of 1300. I think it's probably higher then that.
We have been thinking of upgrading to a 1.5 diesal version of the grand scenic. Does anyone have any experience of towing with these cars. We are new to caravanning, having just left behind a large and cumbersome 6 man tent.
Hi and welcome to ukcs. I tow with a grand scenic but my van is only about 950 mtplm so no probs. the deisel and petrol both have mtplm of 1300 look here http://www.renault.co.uk/CarsDataPages.aspx?mm=newgrandscenic&m=scenic so i don't know if you will be better off or not mine gives me about 28 miles to the gallon. Hope this helps.
Cheers Paul.
------------- Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
we have a renault Grand Scenic (petrol) and in October we towed our van from Liverpool to Plymouth and after ferry crossing from santander to Alicante ( campling la Marina) and apart from being sluggish coming over the moutains either side of Madrid, it was perfect and handled great, so I am sure it will be suitable for your requirements and it is not to bad on the petrol as well .
we nhavew a grand scenic 1.6 petrol, our van is 1000kg all up, we struggled coming back from weymouth last week, currentky looking at getting a bigger car/
As I have said before on other postings, we only had our grand senic for about 3 months as it would not pull any caravan with 7 people in it ,we could only pull a 2 berth with 5 in it, renault impose weight restrictions which the sales poeple didn't tell us about eventhough we told them we may be buying a caravan.
I have a Grand Scenic 1.9 diesel, and although the quoted maximum tow weight is 1300 Kg, the issue is the Gross Train Weight (i.e. total weight of car + caravan + contents of both including passengers).
Your weights may be slightly different, but for my 1.9 Grand Scenic, the car weighs 1530Kg and the GTW is 3050Kg. So with your van, your total weight of car + van is 2830. This gives you only 220Kg for all your passengers (inc driver) and any additional car contents (bikes, spare tyres?), which is not much.
We bought a Bailey Ranger 470/4 which is 967Kg unladen, so we would keep well within this Gross Train Weight figure. I calculated on a spreadsheet that we'd need a van of unladen weight under 1000Kg in order to be able to accommodate luggage, contents etc within the weight limits. Note that is illegal to exceed teh Gross Train Weight, and your insurance would be invalid in an accident, and possibly the car warranty also invalidated as a result.
To confuse it further, the Renault manual says that the 1300 figure is for the car with driver only, and that in "all other situations" (i.e. with passengers) the maximum tow is 850Kg. I have a letter from Renault which confirms that this is not the case as long as you don;t exceed the Gross Train Weight.
Performance wise, we had our first trip out this weekend - and I was very impressed with the rowing capabilities - good power, 25mpg, and rock steady. However, I would wonder whether the 1,5 engine is a little underpowered, especially if you're going for a heavier van.
Sorry this isn't good news for you. We had a nightmare working this out, and it was made worse by the ignorance of most caravan dealers. We bought our van after some excellent advice from Couplands of Louth.
In my opinion, the caravan dealer should not have sold you this van as it is unsuitable for your car.
our previous car was a Nissan Terrano which is what we swopped the senic for when we found out the weight problems. It was excellent for towing and could seat 7 but not enough room behind the 3rd row of seats for the dog, our was a new one so not sure how much they are used.
Hi Andy, how did you manage to get the information from renault i am having a nightmare getting something documented i dont have a caravan yet but am seriously looking and dont have the luxury of changing vehicle.
------------- I like it shaken not stirred a little like my caravan.
I currently have a C4 Grand Picasso, which has a very low towing limit, so will not legally tow my Adria. I was told that this is because the Grand Picasso is a smaller car, ie C4 with a bigger body put on, so has the towing capabilities associated with the smaller car. I assume this is the same with the scenic, which was originally a Megane with a bigger body.
I am changing to an Alhambra, which I feel lucky I can afford at present, they are not the cheapest, but they are a very nice 7 seater.
