I used to have an '04 Avensis hatchback with the 2.0 D4-D engine. As a car its very nice solo. For towing I found that the diesel engine was gutless, and the power came on with the turbo boosting at about 2000 rpm, but then I have a heavy van (1290 Kg) which meant I was towing at 96%. I would guess that with a camper of 900 Kg you will have no problems.
This is a car that I am looking to buy after I have finished towing this season. I'm sure with what you have said that it will pull our camper easily. I'm looking at the Avensis because my wife owns a Yaris and we are more than happy with Toyota. My towing Astra is o.k. but I just want something a little more refined.
We own two toyotas, Yaris and Aventis. And we love them both! Sorry cant comment on towing ability. We did test drive a tourer and it was LOVELY but just a bit too much for our budget at the time otherwise we too would have purchased one
------------- If life gives you lemons throw them at someone :)
The early D4-D engines were not that efficient. Toyota now fit an improved D4-D to the Avensis & the last few Corollas. If you can stretch to the latter version, about 05/55 onwards, you'll find it a lot better. Better still get one with the 2.2 D4-D & its 180bhp & a 6 speed box. We have a 2 at work as pool cars & they are brilliant. On a trip down south I had 60mpg out of it. And by god was it fast...!!!
