Because if its a breakaway cable one designed to pull the van/trailers brakes the tow ball is no good foor two reasons first the cable will ride up over the hitch while towing second if tow ball fails then break away cable will not work. It is alright for a safety chain as this is purely designed to hold trailer to the vehicle should trailer hitch fail

Ok sounds resonable so why when a tow hitch is fitted to a towcar is there no provision to allow for legal connection My hitch was only fitted 4mth ago and when I turned up at dealers to collect van, the hitched it to tow car and guess where they put breakawy cable yep around ball as nowhere else to put it.

While on the subject does the tow hitch get checked during an MOT and if so what do they check

You can either wrap the breakaway cable around the frame of the towbar but NOT the towball itself in case the towball fails, or buy a bracket for £1.50 then you bolt on behind the towbar.

Is your trailer braked?

Why cant you clip it to the bracket?

thats how i use mine.
