Hi I currently have a Vauxhall Monterey 3.2 V6 petrol but i am looking to down size as it cost me a fortune in petrol (and the enviroment), I tow a lunar Zenith 5 1300kg aprox any suggestions on a good reliable tower ?that wont make me want to turn round at the first hill.( had Omega but the van sat to low and did not like hills)
I love driving and towing with the Monterey but can't justify the cost of running it.
Well to be honest, there's a very easy answer. A petrol 4x4 is easily the most uneconomical type of car on the road, excluding things like Rolls Royces etc etc.
As an example, the 4.0ltr auto petrol Jeep does about 14mpg solo, while the diesels varying from 2.5ltr upwards, do a minimum 24mpg. Our last one, a 2.7 did 26 easily and I could get 28, again solo, and it would tow our twin axle up hill and down dale without losing a breath.
Staying with 4x4s, you can't beat a Sorento. It's not perfect but it's in a class of it's own in the 'value for money' stakes.
I used to tow with a Mondeo 2.0SI which i never had a problem with,then changed to a omega 2.0 cd (cracking car could not fault it.) but it gave me a hard time every time we met a hill which made me chage to the big old gas guzzler (same again cracking motor lovelly ride)
I tow with a VW Touran 1.9 TDI - 105 bhp. Our van has a MTPLM of 1430 kg. The car has a max. trailer weight of 1500 kg, and nose weight of 75 kg. The tax is £145 per year and it is Group 6 insurance.
Towing, I get 31 to 37 mpg. Solo it gives about 40 mpg around town, and 55+ mpg on long runs. (figures from on board computer).
