Had a C4 Grand exclusive since august 07 and was a bit worried about its towing ability due to the reviews i had read about the box,the towing weights, etc.
Don't be put off.
I love the box. Best of both worlds. A dream to drive in manual mode, as smooth if not smoother than a manual and if you are feeling lazy the auto works well too. The reviewer must just not like auto's.
Don't be put off by the towing weights either, if you look at the gross train weight and transferred weights it's quite capable with the handbook quoting 1700 towing limits.
I tow a hobby 540 with a miro of 1500 and it returns 30mpg towing and thats not hanging about. I'm sure if i stuck to below 60 i could get that up to mid 30's. Great economy for a big car. Just had a recent trip to Scarborough and tackled some pretty big hills and it took them in it's stride.
I also have a subaru 2.0xt which won towcar of the year and the c4 feels nicer to tow with (probably due to the heavier kerbweight, but the scooby whups its ass on grass and wet stuff.
Highly recommended and don't believe everything you read in the paper.
The suspension isn't as bad as you might imagine and i was concerned about it bobbing all over the place before i bought it. I can only compare it to a subura forester xt and a renault espace, as that is all i have towed with, and the suspension feels no less bobby than the espace so don't have visions of being rocked to sleep.
The exclusive does have the self levelling suspension so i don't know if this has made a difference but it feels ok to me, certainly softer than the scooby but still nice to drive.
