Some on here are of the opinion you need a gearbox cooler if you tow with an automatic gearbox.
My wallet has jumped out of my pocket when it considered how much it would cost to fill your tank

If its got the kerbside weight, no probs, my only advice would be Don't leave it ticking over when you fill it up, it will catch up with the petrol pump!------------- GeorgeB

I tow a 1500kg van with my Mercedes CLK.
Its the best tow car I have ever had.
The auto gearbox is perfect for towing, have heard of problems with other manufacturers auto boxes, but mine has never overheated and has no additional cooler fitted.
Go for it I am sure you will be delighted not only with the obvious power from the engine but the stability of the car with the van on the back.

I have an old 2 litre 190E and it's got plenty of power for my van. I would go for an E class next time I change though as it's a bit heavier than the 190 and I'm told they are more economical too. But if I had the money, I'd go tor the 500SL or an SLK every time! I had no need to install any additional cooler to mine, like almost all modern autos, there is one fitted as standard.
