Hi after my recent post about wanting a jeep cherokee i have decided that i quite fancy a freelander.I've been told that if you get one registerd before march 2001 then the tax is cheaper,also i've been advised to get the one with the BMW 2.0 diesel engine in it as it has good mpg.Any thoughts on towing capabilities,mpg,reliability would be welcomed
I have a TD4 Auto,it's four years old and I've had it since new. It's one of the upgraded freelanders prior to the intoduction of the freelander2. It's a great tow car and apart from a rear door seal needing replaced I've had no other problems. Diesel engine and auto gearbox is a great combination. Towing a charisma 555. I'm not sure about mpg when towing but get about 35mpg solo.
hi, i do approx 2k miles a month, only been let down by the freelander once. that was a £50 maf sensor. i have had 3 since 1999 and had no major problems such as drive train problems.
mpg on a run around 40mpg about 25-30 around town.
Just wish they were a bit heavier for towing. dont have any other freelander but a td4, its a bmw engine and is very reliable.
jeep grand cherokees are great the standard ones are not so good.
hi i had a 2001 y plate td4 up until latter part of hols in aug 07 no real probs but it blew a turbo hose and i had contiued problemens from then on after haveing a local 4x4 ctr to look at it it guzzled diesel so i got rid. The tow limit of 2000kg was good pulled my Bailey Ranger bikes on top plus extra adult ok, go for it mine must have been a fiday afternoon make
Their reliability record would put me off, Mrs Mop's one has just gone bang if you look at the Outdoor life forum although that is the petrol version which has an awful reputation for head gaskets.
I have a 2001 TD4 which gave me no problems until....... I was reversing mine and our friends van on their pitches at the start of last season.
Burnt the clutch out for my trouble £1400 to get it fixed I avoid reversing vans now as everytime I try I get a horrible burning smell from the clutch (complete new clutch)
Anyone had anything similar, I've been caravanning for long enough now to know how to reverse a van without burning the clutch out!!
Take your time in picking the Freelander. It is the best looking 4X4 around but they have been plagued with reliabilty problems usually centered around the electrical systems and certainly pre-2001.
When they were producing under Rover ownership they were at their worst and even now talking to one of the design technicians at LR they still have plenty of problems. The overall car is now built very well benefiting and utilising BMW and subsequently a Ford ethos, but the bits that go wrong are still usually electrical as these are the elements that cannot be fitted by machine but by human hand!

Go Jap and try the Nissan X-Trail, Honda CRV or Mitsubishi range.
