Hi I'm considering purchasing a 2006 Jeep grand cherokee and wondered if anyone has used one for towing, on paper appears to have alot of power and torque, fuel consumption according to published figures not bad for the type of vehicle. I have the Adria 612up with a mptlw of 1780Kg so need a fairly big tow vehicle, at the moment using a 2002 3.0dt Isuzu trooper this tows well but a little short on grunt at motorway speeds.
hi i haven`t got the grand cherokee but got a jeep cherokee i fined it`s a great car for towing my van elldis elussion which is 27ft long and the same weight as yours i would go for it ,it`s handy if you get stuck on a muddy field with a van on the back but that`s me it`s up to you
Hi thanks for that Cobblers we are going away over easter to Edinburgh then down to London will see how my old truck performs, I've seen a Jeep I like but as with everything these days a big outlay, where the old Isuzu is all mine, also thinking about investing in a power upgrade chip as a cheaper alternative, but like a kid in a toy shop I want the nice new shiny toy not the old one reworked, ah well back to the soul searching.

Short on grunt? You amaze me. The 3.0D Trooper I had would tow a 1500kg Burstner at (and probably well over) the legal limit up and over Shap on the M6, in either direction, in 5th without breaking sweat.
I considered them (love the looks & driving position) when I was getting rid of the Pajero, but had a friend with one (petrol) and he said the fuel economy was awful. Estimated he got around 20 MPG towing. I dont know the weight of his van, but its a 6 berth twin axle, or how quickly he drives but it was enough to put me off.
We have just replaced our R reg Grand Cherokee for a newer 53 reg one. The only problem we have found so far is we can not get used to towing with an automatic! I am sure it will come though!
Any tips would be gratefully received we just seem to rev it!
Other than that I love it and I drive it everyday!
We don't seem to get it to go through the gears smoothly it just seems to rev a while before changing.
Prior to 2 weeks ago I had never nor had my hubbie ever driven an automatic and got to say it hasn't come natrually! I am beginning to get used to it though.

Hi Andrew previously I had the Adria 532 1400Kg mptlw and we sailed along, but this new one seems to hold us back not sure if its the weight or aerodynamics, or if my old girl is just getting a bit tired, although I've just had all new injectors fitted and some other work under the Isuzu recall for engine problems and things havn't improved. I find at 50 mph we start to struggle and 60 is manageable but needs alot of prodding with the right foot.

my previous ml used to increse temp about 20%, notice the jeep does not move. Also notice it holds top gear on motorway hills except for the larger ones! I tow a large 1900KG van eldiss crusader.
I've had a couple of 3.0 diesels, and I'm very happy with them. Economy isn't great, but that goes with the territory really.
With a big caravan, I usually get 19mpg, but the Jeep has only done 16,000 miles, and I expect it to loosen up a bit yet. The last one did.
There's no shortage of power, it just does the job, effortlessly.
Gina - if you hold the accelerator down it will delay changing up. Once you have the car moving, just ease up on the pedal for a moment, and it will probably change up. If not, there may be a problem, and you should get it checked. The auto box on the Grand Cherokee is particularly good for always being in the right gear and changing smoothly.
we have an '07 grand cherry and it is more than happy pulling our Sprite Quattro (1600kg). It still has plenty of power when you want it....and is still quick off the lights when you want it to be.
we chose the cherry over some of the alternatives as it had a nice smooth auto gearbox and seems to be in the right gear most of the time.
to be honest i have no idea what consumtion is like. If i did, then I am driving the wrong car.
its also worth knowing that it takes a massive nose weight. Our van is likes it just short of 100kg, and you hardly notice it when you hitch-up.
towbar is easy to fit if you intend doing it....that is once you have worked out how to get the rear bumper off.
