Hi, does anyone have any experience of towing with a Mazda 6 diesel (143 bhp).  At the moment I have a petrol version which I love,  but I need that low down grunt of a deisel now I tow a caravan. I have had a couple of Mazda's and never had any trouble at all with them. Would welcome any comments please.

     Thanks

               Alan

New model may be OK - but if you're considering the 2002-2007 model, consider carefully - they seem to be prone to very expensive problems with the fuel system.

Honest John Mazda 6 diesel thread

This particular thread runs to two volumes. Encouragingly for you the petrols are said to be very good!

Thanks for that Alan. Dissapointing reviews on the diesel engine there, totally opposite to the petrol engine. I see you have a CR-V diesel I have been toying with the idea of having one of those what sort of return do you get on fuel consumption towing and not towing ?

Hi Alan,

It's fairly easy for me to better 40mpg solo (17 mile commute, cross country and a mile or two of traffic). With care I can get to 45. The worst I have seen towing was 25, coming back from Norfolk in a stiff head wind, the best about 32. No problems so far in 46,000 miles (not all towing of course!)

I have a 2002-2007 mazda 6 diesel 136 saloon and find it to be a superb towing vehicle , immense low down grunt and even better at around the sixty mark , very willing and holds my caravan perfect . Done over 70,000 miles now with absolutly no problems at all , just ensure its serviced at the correct milage . After all its 95% the same engine as the 2.0 ltr diesel ford mondeo tdci , so look how popular that is at towing . With the new model , 143 , its also a new type engine succeeding the previous one , so improvements will have been made making it even better . I have had Mazdas for years and years and swear by them , total reliability , just drive and service them properly and gain problem free motoring . ---- Steve

Thanks for that Steve. I was wondering if the problems are more related to the company fleet market and get a bit of a hammering. I was thinking of the 143 version. What do you tow with it Steve ?

Hello again Agri , we tow a small 4 berth of 1100 kgs with the awning , caravan spare wheel , wheel clamp , tv , emergency equipment box and large selection of tools in the car boot .  With a 75 kgs nose weight it really tows well , that well that I now don't use a stabiliser , and have been through some strong winds and bad weather this year . It must have some negatives , but truthfully , I can't find any and its nearly 4 years old now . Don't forget the diesel estate version has been Caravan Towcar of the year a couple of times , maybe I am bias , but  comfort , economy , power and all the toys can't be bad . Saying that , there are other vehicles which must be as good . ---- Steve .
