This might be a strange question. But does anyone else get a tugging feeling when towing their van. The outfit we have is well within the capabilities of the car or so the handbook says. We have just been away for out first proper outing and I felt that the van was tugging. Can anyone give me some advice on this or exp it themselves. The van comes in at 760kgs loaded and car has max 900kgs. I dont think we had anywhere near this load. Thanks in anticipation.

It could be that the over run damper is worn out or it needs greasing via the 2 grease nipples on top of the over run unit

Apart from the over run damper , check for oval brake drums , check tyres , check for badly adjusted brakes , worn wheel bearings . You can sometimes think it's tugging when you have a bouncy back end of the car , do you use a caravan stabiliser ?

Hi Wizard9956. Yes we spent 250 pounds on a new alko one when we bought it.. Could one cause be tyre pressure ??. When we bought van we were told it had been serviced so I suppose it could be brakes as I am not much good when it comes to that sort of thing. We are only going away once more this year as we already have hols booked before we got van, not going very far so will get it serviced for next season, as hope to use it more in 2009.

I'm not sure tyre pressure will cause tugging , but i've had a bouncy backend on one of my old cars and it did feel like the caravan was tugging at the car .

I found that insufficient nose weight can cause this effect. I suggest measuring the nose weight when loaded.
