Hi there one and all,

I am after some sound advice on a new tow car we are looking at. I currently have a Mit. Shogun and tow an Abbey Vogue 540. Due to the so called credit crunch we are looking at a new car, a Peugeot 308 sw. The advice i seek is, is it ok for the Abbey. i have looked on the what tow car site and it said it is 95% compatible.

The kerb weight of the Peugeot is 1600kg and the max weight of the Abbey is 1500kg. I heard that a rought guide is that the max weight of the caravan should not excede 80% of the tow car. If my maths is right then this does excede that rule 80% of 1600kg is 1280kg, yet according to the what tow car site, it says its ok, so to rubbish this rule. So despite the what tow car site i am some what dubious to say the least. so please HELP me.....

While the kerbweight might be 1600 kgs what is the max tow weight of the peugeot

i would have thought 1500 kgs might be on the heavy side for a 308 estate , the two main clubs do a car / caravan matching service which has a very up to date info on british spec cars might be worth ringing them as there advice is sound

Only the diesel automatic versions weigh 1600kg according to the Parkers website.

Depends on which engine you are choosing most of the range weighs less than 1500kg

The 2.0HDI diesel is in band F for the new road tax system, same as my 2.0L petrol mondeo. There was me thinking diesels are cheaper to tax. Look at a mondeo instead? even the 2.2TDCi with 172bhp is only in band D.

When i decide to change i will be buying something older and really polluting and get the benefit of cheaper road tax. mental or what?

you will struggle uphill towing at 95% really, especially with a 308  ..a 408 would be slightly better...i'd take Grampian 91's advice and get a modeo 2.2 diesel myself loads of grunt and great mpg..i have a farmer friend who rallies with us he has an abbey vogue and a mondeo ...say no more ..iv'e always said "if you want to find a fool in the countryside farms ,you have to take him with you!! "
