Thanks Caz, I was wondering how to summon the cavalry lol!

No probs Tim, license categories and weight ratios are a minefield for sure, how anybody ever ends up towing the right outfit is beyond me lol.

I used to have a TD4 Freelander and towed a 1500Kg van with it.

The car was too underpowered for easy towing at that weight - let alone with an 1800Kg van on the back.

The Freelander (especially Freelander 2) should be ok to tow some of the lighter twin axle vans like the Bailey rangers, but other than that could be a problem.

We looked at a few smaller 4 x 4s ( Honda CRV, VW Tiguan etc.)

The manufacturers give a 2 tonne limit, which is heavier than the car!  OK for us as our Pageant is max 1400 Kg so within the 85% guidelines.

 We had a Frontera before  which is just under 2 tonne, now have the Sorento which can tow virtually any van!!! I prefer having the heavier towcar  for safety!

Suggest a Discovery or Kia Sorento, both of which are great for towing our Conquereor (1865 kg mtplm).

We have just done 1500 miles in France towing at 86% (1940kg kerbweight car empty + full tank with van loaded to laden weight of around 1660kg) - both van and car weights verified by weighbridge. The LR towed fantastic at 60mph for up to 10 hours at a time including stops and not a twitch despite being passed by coaches at 80mph etc. Had to hold it back most of the time from creeping up to 65/70. Returned 23mpg with 3 bikes on the roof and 5 passengers with all luggage etc.

Had a discovery TD5 auto before which I felt did not have the same ability as the freelander 2 other than space.
