The Freelander (especially Freelander 2) should be ok to tow some of the lighter twin axle vans like the Bailey rangers, but other than that could be a problem.
We looked at a few smaller 4 x 4s ( Honda CRV, VW Tiguan etc.)
The manufacturers give a 2 tonne limit, which is heavier than the car! OK for us as our Pageant is max 1400 Kg so within the 85% guidelines.
We had a Frontera before which is just under 2 tonne, now have the Sorento which can tow virtually any van!!! I prefer having the heavier towcar for safety!
