Just wondering if some of the experts on the above could help me on this one - I think that I understand it but having had a Abbey Adventure 320 for 5 years I have at last got around to reading some of the user manuals and there is something that is foxing me!

My Mass in Running Order is 1118kg
Essential Habitation Equipment Payload is 82kg
Personal Effects Payload is 129kg
Optional Equipment Payload is 23kg
MTPLM is therefore 1352 kg

all straightforward until I read the Service Handbook and I noticed that MTPLM (declared) is 1352 and MTPLM (POSSIBLE) is 1500kg

I also notice that the tyre pressures for the former are 59psi and for the latter 65psi

Does this mean subject to vehicle capabilities I can go up to 1500kg - Why does swift do this?

Many thanks in advance if anyone can give me an explanation

is the declared actualy the MAM, the maximum AUTHORISED Mass? ie the manufacturers decided upon a lower limit for whatever reason, and the 1500Kg the maximum the chassis will take?
the secon bit if pure speculation, and just a possibility, I am now also intruiged.

You can have the plate uprated, for around £50.  You do need to go through the proper channels and get a new plate, not just start loading the van up more!

Stated weights are usually kept down to make it possible for the van to be towed by a greater range of vehicles.

Bailey certainly 're-plate' their 'vans. (Senators at least). A regular contributor to another forum uprated the MTPLM on his Senator's plate from around 1730Kgs to Baileys upper limit of 1800Kgs. (Not that you get the choice, they just uprate it from the production line figure to their official higher figure). It cost around £50.

He had a Reich 4 wheel motor mover fitted that weighed about 60Kgs, thus almost totally wiping out any increase in the plated weight, but did allow him to maintain his other payload limits without compromising his comforts. the intended fixture of the motor mover was the main reason why he had the plate details uprated.

Needless to say, he has to keep the tyres at a much higher psi than before.

In your case, you stand to gain an additional 150Kgs or so; not an inconsiderable amount. The main question perhaps should be: can your car cope with an additional 150Kgs behind it and what affect will this have on your towcar/trailer %age ratio?

timtheenchanter & Jennifer

Many thanks for your reply - I think that Jennifer probably has the answer. My brochure and spec sheets states the weights as per my post above ie MPTLM(declared.

It was not until I was looking for what my tyre pressure should be that I noticed the whole Abbey Aventura range and it gives MPTLM(declared) and MPTLM(POSSIBLE) for each with different tyre pressures dependent on weight. I was not aware that you could have the weight uprated and wouldn't have a clue how to go about it.

On a separate rant it really cheeses me off that unlike a car which is made my A manufacturer who puts all the info in one handbook, Caravan manufactures give you a very anodyne handbook which is no help to anyone. You then have to plough through loads of supplier details for the info you require. Any way thanks to all (I feel better now)

Defender,

Many thanks you and Jennifer are coming from the same angle and I understand what you are saying. I dont really want or need to uprate. I was however thinking that if for some reason I was close to the limit and got put over a weigh bridge I could at least show the Police the service book and point that I was okay.

My tow vehicle could hand the extra weight as it would put me up to about roughly 91% which is in my view okay. However it would certainly challenge my nose weight if you work it out at 7% of the MPTLM.

Many thanks again

George Mc

PS because they have said nothing more about it I am assuming that if I did upgrade the extra 6lbs psi in the tyres means I wouldnt have to uprate the tyres

Many manufacturers now downrate their caravans to get around the new rules for those who passed their car tests after 1996. At 1500 kg MTPLM it is unlikely that a trailer can be towed legally on a post-1996 category B license, while at 1352 kg it would be legal behind a reasonable number of cars. Many caravans built in recent years can be uprated, but once uprated there's a good chance they won't be legal for growing proportion who passed their car test after 1996.

HTH,

Geoff
