I have been towing with a 51 Mondeo 2L LX for 3 years with absolutely no problems towing Swift Coastline 540 (Charisma 555) 1475 kg. Am seriously thinking of upgrading to 2005/6 model Mondeo but my garage having difficulty obtaining from usual sources due to poor availibility on account of down turn in new sales. Am thinking about a 2006 1.9 TDI s Passat (saloon) which my garage has - anyone any experience towing with this car

I tow with a Skoda Superb with the 1.9 pdi 130 engine. Virtually the same car as the Passat, if the one you are looking at has the 130pdi engine I would highly recommend it as a tow car.
Tows our Burstner [1500kg max] superbly. Pardon the pun!
got a 05 1.9 tdi 130 sport version estate what a car will pull our swift 490 with ease. if it is the 130 it will cope with anything just watch your weights

We towed our last van with a 2001 Passat 1.9 TDi 130bhp. I think the weight of our van was 1410kgs. It towed well, pretty solid and steady, but had over 150thou on the clock and we ended up having to change it.
Thanks for all replies - Cathymac I think Model is probably Passat V1 1.9 TDI S which according to info I can gleam is 103BHP - not as much as the Mondeo I'm driving now - Will check at garage Monday. Van is 2008 Swift Coastline 540 SE (Special Edition Charisma 555 for Highbridge Caravans) MTPLM is 1472

Went back to garage today and they confirmed that the Passat in question is listed as 105BHP - don't really want to lose power - the Mondeo I have (which turned over 100,000 on clock yesterday) is listed as 115BHP. Have also tested a 56 Vectra but not convinced it was car for me and garage have a 120 BHP Saab which I quite like and is at what looks a good price. So in a bit of a quandary really but am really tempted to hang on until a good 2.0l TDCi Mondeo comes along.

We have towed with a VW Passat albeit a 2.0 110 BHP model. We find an excellent towcar with one problem - the clutch. We have suffered from a "smoking clutch" a couple of times both when reserving and when towing up a steep hill in a traffic jam. I believe, however, that Mondeo's and Audi's suffer from the same problem. Other than this, it is a really good towcar
I had an 04 passat 1.9tdi S 105bhp, towing was good but handling and noise was far worse than a mondeo, also it was probably the most unreliable car I have had!!!
I think the very latest passat has just had (very recently) a new diesel that is common rail and therfore quieter, also the handling improved on the later model.
take it for a test drive and listen to the engine noise compared to your mondy, this was what I was most dissapointed with.
Watch for paint scratches, mine was metallic blue and scratched very very easily, down to the primer.
I would consider the latest version with the brand new common rail diesel.
Otherwise I think the best thing about passats is the blue dials!!
Our son tows with a Passat 1.9 TDI estate. You should have no problems at all. My Touran, 1.9 TDI has a max. towing weight of 1500kg. I tow it with a Coachman Pastiche with a MTPLM of 1430kg, and have pulled it through France and back effortlessly. And the Touran is only 105 bhp, against the Passat's 130 bhp.

Do you actually mean, "Volkswagen are known to be noisy?" If so, I cannot agree with you on this point. My Touran is an extremely quiet vehicle. Except on tick-over and pulling off in first gear, it is no more noisy than its petrol counterparts.
if look at websites on passat tdi complaints are of noisy engine me i'm used to it is noisy when rev up gears and high speed cant say on your touran as different engine
