AD210358 like most threads this one has broadened to discussions about other vehicles. The reason for this is that Les4paintings was initially discussing the original Freelander which, as has been pointed out, was renowned for appalling reliability, head gasket probs etc.
Then the conversation expanded to discussing the Freelander 2 and other possible alternatives. If this gets the OP thinking and discovering other options where is the harm?
Snowy 747, in a later posting les admits he is looking at the the Freelander 2 but to the uninformed there is still later posts going on about the original freelander which is just clouding the main issue now.

I have read too many bad reviews of freelanders to consider one, However if that sort of 4x4 you are thinking of have you looked at the new Honda CRV? Also the new Kia Sportages seem to have good reviews and ave high kerb anf towing weights considering their size
If I was looking for a small 4 x 4 it would have to be anything japanese or Korean I'm afraid,
Good luck with your car search
I'm sorry but i have to make a comment, how can anyone recomend a Kia?,
They are a Pacific rim car and made of completly inferior materials, does nobody watch Top Gear??? why do you think they are soooo cheap?
I was recommending a Kia due to the fantastic reviews of have read from people who actually use them for towing purposes! Like the caravan club who really rate them. And as for completely inferior materials I don't think you have actually seen one of the latest generation of kias, yes the early ones 1996-2000 we're apalling but now they are different
I don't listen to the d##kheads on top gear as they only seem to rate cars that I for one could never afford
Sorry if recommending a Kia offended you but OH's Hyundai is part of the same group 6 years old and not a single rattle inside we love ours, Can't say I have ever been in a land rover that can say that over 6 months old, and I used to work in the car industry! So I think I have been in and driven my fair share of vehicles!
I was merely stating a different opinion if Les4paintings was put off by the deserved bad press of freelander and freelander 2's
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
Nothing wrong with Kia had 3 now Ist was the old Kia Sportage with the Mazda petrol engine had it 2 years and towed a Avondale Kestrol 1100kg bit agricultral but otherwise good car, 2nd was Kia Carens mk2 diesel 3 years no problems, now got Mk3 Kia Carens diesel 138 BHP 6 speed gearbox no problems so far plus it has 5 year warranty.
Our friends tow with a Freelander 2 and love it. I like them but consider the price too high, which is why we have a Sorrento.
If money was not a problem I would have a Range Rover diesel, or a Land Cruiser.
I had an 89 Range Rover V8 which was a lovely car but thirsty and had a few problems due to its age, ghiving it some serious off roading probably did'nt help!!

They rated the new Ford Fiesta very highly, just been rewatching on Dave...........
They're not too expensive...............

My Daihatsu 4 Track will pull anything. Ideal for the two of us as its only a three door. OK its not very new but it is very reliable. We have had it 5 years now and certainly won't be changing it. When it fails us thats when we finish our caravanning altogether, unless our trusty caravan goes first. The Daihatsu is 12 years old and our Avondale Sandmartin caravan is 14 years old.
I also would have a new Kia, let those with blinkers on slate them, makes them more attractive imo if they are not too common. We had a Kia for a second car for a while and I can honestly say value for money and reliability outstripped anything else we have owned in the last 15 years.
Kia are good value especially the Ceed with its 7 year warranty, not bad cars either.
A colleague has an 8 year old Freelander TD4 which has been very reliable, economical too, so they are'nt all bad.
I had a 1973 Land Rover for about 5 years, used it for off roading, it was a reliable old thing and dead easy to fix, but slow and thirsty! Fun though. Swapped it for the Rangie!

Every one slates the 1.8 petrol Freelander re-headgaskets I sold my first one with 116,000miles on the speedo and it never even had the rocker cover off let alone the cylinder head, second one TD4 approx 98,000 mile no more problems than you would expect with any vehicle and my current one 05reg TD4 about 30,000 to date and no issues, so not all problems are vehicle related maybe you need to look at the owners/drivers.

Land Rover Freelander 2 & 2014 Lunar Quasar 554
I tow my Bailey Senator Vermont with a Freelander 2 auto TD4, cannot fault it. All vehicles have their faults and My previous Vauxhall Zaphira 2.2 was a good example it lived in the garage from Lambada Probe to Brake disc problems at 22,000 miles.
