Hi all, I am looking for a bit of advice, with the advance payments on Motability cars
steeply increasing I am in difficulty finding a car that will suit our needs ie. be capable of pulling our van safely MTPLM 1400kg and has a reasonable advance payment, the only one that fits the bill is a Kia Carens 2.0 ltr diesel but even that is
nearly £1000 advance payment.I am wondering if buying a old 4x4 such as a Jeep
Cherokee to use as a towcar at around £1000 and taxing/insuring for 6 months of the year, and going for a small economical runaround at nil AP may be the way to go
what do you think? all contributions most welcome(to the forum I mean)..

Not sure if it helps or if it is suitable but a chap at the centre i work has just secured a top range 1.9TDCi Vectra for an advanced payment of £299.

Am I missing something?
I thought motability was to get the individual more mobile by assisting with payments to buy a standard car, not to provide a towcar??
Yes you are!
If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, getting a new car is easier and more affordable than ever. Through Motability, you simply turn part or all of your allowance into the car of your choice.
Because of my OH's disability we choose to have a 4 berth caravan to make life a little more tolerant and to allow her to still enjoy caravanning. This means we require a heavier tow car to pull our caravan. We do have a Motability vehicle for which we have to put down an upfront payment and give up part of her Disability Living Allowance for the privelage.
Prospecter you are in the same situation as me, my OH as Parkinsons Disease, and the Mobility scheme enables us to get a suitable car to tow the caravan with, so enabling me to take her on holiday, i see some of the A/Payments have gone up on the larger vehicles which you need for towing, and some of the small family saloons are no A/P, as the car market is now i thought they would have come down.

I just get a bit peed off when people complain that their motability will no longer afford a towcar with their allowance.

Steve, with that attitude you are making other disabled people such as my wife fit your caption and be s...t on by the pigeons. JJim is only asking advice as will we when we change tow cars.
My wife has paid all her taxes, and has developed M.S a horrible wasting condition. She loves caravanning and needs a large van with a plenty of space.

We are not complaining at all.
Gavel, you've just hit the nail on the head.
I have no problem with motability (quite the opposite), and what you do with the payments is nothing to do with me. My only gripe is that I hear of (on this forum especially) people complaining that their motability will no longer afford them the same towcar.
I read the following line as a complaint. "the advance payments on Motability cars steeply increasing I am in difficulty finding a car that will suit our needs ie. be capable of pulling our van safely MTPLM 1400kg"
As you have now pointed out it is not a complaint, then I will refrain from any further posts on this topic to let it get back on track with any advice you may have. Apologies for the hijack.
Steve.

Hi same here, we have a mobility car and just got in Sept 08 a C4 Grand Picasso. Yes the advanced payment for the 2.0HDI 7seater was £1495 and it has cruise control, semi-auto gearbox, good speck. We absolutley love it, it tows our van a dream, the max tow is 1500. We looked at the Mazda 5 but for the very basic one it was just the same advanced payment. Vauxhall were doing the Zafira, basic or just one up, diesel for £299 advanced payment but you would have to check now. I think the Zafira can tow 1400 or 1500kg.
I use this site to help us look for a motability car, give it a go....
answer the questions on what you need and it will tell you the advanced payment for that 3 month quarter, Jan/Feb/Mar is on now I think. Good luck, Gary

Hi Steve,I am not going to have a go at you for being an a**e a few have already said enough, I WAS asking advice from other disabled caravanners we are in the position that we are both disabled my wife severly so, and unable to fly get travel insurance etc, caravanning is our only way of having a holiday we have paid our taxes (I still do) and are
entitled to the Higher rate of Disability living allowance which we CHOOSE to exchange for a car this is not free! we require a car which is able to tow our van safely, advance payments (non refundable) are rising steeply and with only my wage coming in I am not in a position to fork out more than £1k yes I could ask for help from motability but
will not do so because of people like you thinking I am a sponger just
think yourself lucky you are not in the same predicament yourself
we would rather have our health any day.
