I know the subject of bike carriers have been discussed many times but I am trying to persuade my OH to take our bikes away with us but he doesn't think that towbar carriers will be safe whilst towing a caravan and I am worried that we will struggle to get the bikes on a roof rack.

We don't have a roof rack or roof bars on our Megane Scenic and have a fixed towbar fitted.

Has anyone got any advice please?

My 05 Scenic had a plastic tailgate lower edge so tailgate mounted bike carriers are not recommended.

If you put bikes on the towball, the weight of the bikes have to be taken off the nose weight of the van so again not recommended.

If you do not have a glass roof, you can use Thule bars for the roof and I got 3 bikes on the roof of mine easily enough.

If you have a glass roof, then Thule do not recommend their bars for the car so you will have to try another make or get Renault ones.

I carried two bikes around on a Witter towbar rack for years but that was when vans were lighter and I did have a Citroen with the clever suspension.  It was never a problem but I don't think I'd do it with my current car and van.  It all depends on the weight as stated above.

We had a 2005 Scenic.   It really wouldn't have liked any extra weight at the rear, as the rear suspension was quite spongey anyway (even with suspension stiffeners fitted) so I wouldn't be happy with putting bikes on the back.

We used roof bars and cycle carriers to carry 4 bikes on the roof, which worked out well, except that we couldn't take bikes on our main French holiday as we needed to take the roofbox.

Thanks for the advice, looks like we will be looking at investing in roof bars and a cycle carrier although the few I have priced so far have proved very expensive.

Does anyone know of any deals going at the moment for them?

I've always used www.roofbox.co.uk - good value and very knowledgeable if you need advice too.

You may find that you have to get Renault roof bars, as I'm not sure that the likes of Thule make them, but I may be wrong. It's typical Renault - like having to buy Renault wiper blades, and the headlamp bulb being a dealer only replaceable item - yes, really!

Andy - Thule bars are fine for a 53 plate onwards Scenic / Grand Scenic as long as you don't have a glass roof.  They fit in the fixing points fine.

Ah yes - remember now - I had a glass roof, so had to use Renault bars.

Just another reason why I'll never buy a Renault ever again!
