I've just cleaned a new one .... I used coat after coat of Nitromors .... paint it on with a small brush, leave for 15 mins or so, wipe hard with kitchen paper ... repeat (must have been) ten times - took pretty much all of it off but still had to finish it off with 240 'wet & dry' paper. Got there in the end ... finished by spraying it with some brake disc spray I found in the garage to clean off any grease. Looks ok and is nice and clean. You'd think they'd make one to suit Alko hitches wouldn't you?

P.S. - hold or prop the whole thing upside down so the Nitromors doesn't dribble on to the rest of the bar.

Did the job this morning. Used asharp scraper to remove the paint, then just cupped a bit of 400 grade wet-or-dry in my palm to give the ball a quick polish.  Haven't tried this method before; it was amazingly easy.
