I an NOT recommending one as it seems pretty pointless as it seems everybody always recommends what they themselves use (yawn!),.

On the other hand, the OP asked for opinions, and it would be wrong to give an opinion on something you haven't got.

I've had lots of cars, and very few have been good enough to recommend.

It's a difficult balance to get right, but we (not you in particular) sometimes seem to find it difficult to accept other peoples' point of view, and that someone else prefers a different car to our choice.

The regular argument about cobbs and cadacs is another good example.

I don`t find it difficult to accept others points of view, merely have the advantage of driving a range of vehicles and forming a (MY) opinion on what I drive. The point I am making which others don`t seem to accept is that the contributors who come out with statements such as "Mondeos are brilliant, I`m on my third/fourth, etc" is hardly a balanced viewpoint if said contributor(s) never drive anything else, is it?

Which is why, despite probably driving a wider selection of vehicles than the vast majority on here, I won`t "recommend" a vehicle because it would be misleading as I haven`t driven them all.

Cars are also down to personal preference, I am therefore of the opinion that if you chuck in a few ideas the OP can track a few down, have a test drive, do their own research and then decide what suits.

I guess some of the Skoda models must also be pretty hefty then Angus as they come out of the same stable so to speak, so they might be worth exploring too?  Perhaps the Superb and some of the Octavia estates?

Ali

The previous Superb was based on a stretched Passat floorpan and would be OK (unsure about the new one), but the Octavia is Golf-based and wouldn`t be a good match for something as heavy as the OP suggests. There have also been suggestion of instability (long overhang/softish suspension in relation to wheelbase), but I did look at a diesel VRs estate before I got my current van - brilliant VFM.

I tow a 1480kg (MTPLM) caravan with a current shape Zafira 150 CDTi and it is no problem at all.  The only minor issue is motorway ruts as discussed on thread within the caravans section.  As a tow car it is quite heavy for its size, has firm suspension and std ESP.  Early current shapes ones cost from 6 - 7k.

It might be interesting if someone asked which towcars we WOULDN'T recommend from personal experience

That really would start some bitter arguments
