We have cruise on both our cars.  I use it fairly often solo, especially useful for sticking to speed limits. The MPG does seems to be steadier with it than without it.

I don't use it for towing as I don't feel in control - I know it's all in my head but I just don't like it!

As with all gadgets, you have to experiment and get experience to get the best out cruise control - but once you know what you're doing with it, it makes driving in almost any road conditions easier.

I had CC retro-fitted to my X-Trail, and got a three-speed programmable system, so I can set three buttons on the dash to whatever speed I like. I usually keep them at 30, 50 and 60 when towing - 30/50/70 when solo. Click the button and the car accelerates (or decelerates) to the pre-set speed. And of course, you can set it manually to cruise at any other speed you like.

Now I find it quite hard to drive without cruise. Around town, it helps keep me under 30mph, and I fear no speed camera! But towing with cruise is a delight.

As for fuel consumption, I've not noticed any big difference one way or another.
