It seems only this year's ones are quite a bit heavier, but prior to that they are all around 1500 kg odd and there is no way I would tow above kerb weight let alone 1800 kg with a car that size! Dunno why they give it such a high max tow tbh.

You don't have to be among the trucks, just drive economically. If I really try hard, I can get 54mpg in my V70.
I would never have thought it possible myself, but two mates kept telling me it was so, so I checked the data, bought one and it's true!!
Thinking about it a bit more, maybe the Swedes have a different method of specifying the tow weight, eg with a full tank of fuel, 2 passengers plus a bit of luggage, plus my wife's handbag etc.
We've got a Galaxy 51 plate so not sure what mark that is but its the perfect tow car and family car. We wanted to upgrade to the newer Galaxy but the seats don't come out like in ours and we like to take seats out to give the dogs more room. Going down to Minehead i was getting 47/48 mile per gallon and earnt myself my 1st speeding ticket in my 19 years of driving :(
We're going up to Scotland in 4 weeks with our brand new Bailey so will let you know what the towing mpg is :)

Our Skoda easily averages 55mpg on our daily commute almost wholly along national speed limit roads( dual c-way or m-way), and driving at, or close to, the limit.
Oh, btw national speed limit (aka maximum legal speed) in the UK is 70 mph.
I had a Golf TDi as a company car back in the nineties, that easily did 50 plus. It was the estate version of the car, great little vehicle I really miss it especially its fuel consumption compared to my X Trail lol.
Even the XC90 doesn't have a kerbweight like you are quoting for your massively smaller V70 Tykey!!!!!

I'll admit I was living under a misapprehension, so I'm grateful for your comments. At least it doesn't alter what I am doing, as I'm still well safe.
I've done a bit more digging on the volvo forums and come up with this, which seems to confirm the conclusion.
The kerb weight of a V70 is model dependent but is in the region of 1500kg for all models, give or take 60kg. 85% of this is 1275kg, which is the maximum weight which most would advise that you tow. In practical terms the weight of a 21ft overall length 5 berth caravan is slightly less than this. The maximum train weight of a V70 (Kerb weight + weight of fuel + fluids + passengers + luggage + weight of trailer) is 3590kg. If you add a kerb weight of 1500kg, to a tank of fuel at 70kg, driver and three passengers at 60kg each, 110kg of luggage, this leaves 1600kg to spare from the 3590kg max train weight. Volvo's recommended maximum towing weight is 1600kg, so I hope the figures I have given will give some idea as to how this has been arrived at. I certainly wouldn't consider towing a 1600kg trailer with my V70 though. My caravan weighs 1100kg and the V70 tows it very nicely. Be aware that the maximum train weight is a legally enforceable figure under the Construction and Use Regs, and the penalties for exceeding it can be very severe! Hope this helps
Maybe I'm an old retired crinkly these days. When I had a company car with free petrol, I used to join the 85mph mob in the outer lane.
Since all that changed, I'm now back in the otherlanes at 60 to 70 mph, but I've been surprised how many people there are in the two rareified left hand lanes, there are a lot more than people think
