Could anyone help us? We have a motorhome, but our sister decided after being bitten by the campsite bug that she would love to buy a caravan of her own. Trouble is, she has a small Peugeot 206 1.4 lx and wants to know if she can safely tow a small caravan with it, since she does not really want to sell her car. She did consider a small motorhome but this would mean she would have to ditch her car since she would not be able to keep two taxable vehicles on the road. Caravanning would be a more affordable option, but having to get a bigger car would defeat the object. Can anyone enlighten us?
Have a look at trailer tents and folding campers. There are plenty of models that you will be able to tow with a 206.
Without loking up the spec, I'd bet that you can probably tow 1000KG with a 206 (But do check this). If I'm correct there are loads of vans that come in under 1000KG.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.
It would seem that she could tow a caravan of up to about 900kg fully laden. There are not many modern vans that fall into that category though a Freedom caravan would almost certainly be OK. She could also look around for an early 90's ABI Monza, or a similar age Lunar Meteorite or even a Meteor. Then going up the scale a little I think that such as the early 90's vans such as the Eldis Whirlwind, the Sprite Alpine, or similar would probably just about be under that limit.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Aw, thanks for such a quick response! We are now on the search for something lightweight and just the ticket, bouyed along by your advice and our own enthusiasm to get our sister kitted out and ready to join us on our tours around Britain. Thank you all for your replies. I think we should warn you that this will open up such a hornets nest of inane questions though, so ask for your patience and understanding in the near future. Help is not so very far away with this handy site and such helpful people!
Have a look at the freedom range of caravans,We had one as our first van and we used to tow ours with a little 1.3 Jeep and a 1.3 Suzuki Wagon, Always stable and used to tow all over the country,
They are fairly cheap to buy and also don't get damp
If you google freedom caravans in stafford they always have a large range of stock,
The sunseeker model is a 3/4 berth but has no bathroom, whereas the jetstream models are 2 berth but do have a small wet room , I've even some some fitted with showers and central heating.
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
My new van 1983 ABI Ace Rallyman is only 777kg fully laden according to the plate and if she passed her test after 97 the basic rule is so long as the whole outfit weigh's no more than 3.5ton and the van doesn't outweigh the car you'll be fine, the maximum limit is a 3.5ton vehicle the max you can tow then is a 750kg trailer on a post 97 licence.
The Freedom range would all be ok, also as mentioned there are many small vans fron the early 90s. My 1994 Bailey is only 816 Kgs MTPLM and I tow it with a Seat Ibiza 1.4 Tdi.
