I have just purchased and pick up a Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec tomorrow with only 26000 miles on the clock, first registered in Feb 2004. I thought great, but did a car check to make sure everything was OK for £9.95 the Gold version. On their website it included mileage check at no cost, after receiving the details it states 26000 miles recorded on the 10th August and goes on to say " Please note that mileages are supplied by third parties and are not validated. Mileages may be rounded to the nearest thousand"
That seems pointless to me, I know nothing more than what I have already seen. It would seem anybody could say whatever mileage they like. What was wrong with them checking the MOT mileage, they must be able to obtain this.
I changed my old Berlingo for a new one a few mnths ago. Recently I recieved a letter, I can't remember from whom, but they said they were acting on behalf of a trader who had recently bought my old car & asked me to fill in a card stating mileage when I sold the car & send it to 'em in a prepaid envelope.
I could'nt remember exactly but it was just over 37k miles so I put that. As I'd had the car from new the buyer recieved accurate imformation but obviously they only had my word for it.
i have used text check that advertise on TV - cannot go into too much detail at the moment but they said car i was looking at was clear ( not stolen or insurance right off )- well....... i got stopped by the community support officer whilst moving it off drive to clean it but had no tax on it - he checked it on PNC and it came back as being stolen and they have confiscated the car. Like i say cant go into more detail as it is now subject to investigation as suspected insurance fraud by previous owner.
We've just bought a year old car from Ford's and they did all the checks on it before we bought it. I thought that the proper checks cost about £99 at least and if Ford's hadn't already done so i would have paid the £99 or more before parting with my money. I know it seems a lot to pay out but well worth it

I think that most data for this is picked up from the portion of the V5 which is completed by the previous owner when they send it back to DVLA.
As you are not buying from the previous owner, (they wouldn't be the previous owner if you are), there is less chance of them misleading you with duff information. But, as it is still possible, the data check company needs to cover itself.
