yes you can tow this caravan i think max towing limit is about 1800kg but will say i had bmw 320td 150 bhp max towing limit 1750kg my caravan is 1375kg max and we didnt like it bouncing along road and hard work up hill and on grass clutch burning loved the car but had to go. got l200 much better
Forget the max tow limit, if you were to tow the 1800kg that they say is the maximum tow limit you would be towing far more than the kerbweight of the car. The V70 is a fine towcar and would be a superb match for a MTPLM 1400kg caravan

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Depends on the year you are looking at, the kerb weight ranges vary massively from 1400 kg upwards.
Guidelines are 85% of kerb weight but these vehicles have a max tow in excess of the kerb weight in most cases. Personally I would not exceed the kerb weight.
I would agree....never exceed the kerbweight. Most Volvos do have a high towing limit, so you would not damage the car, but it is a very bad idea for the van to be heavier than the car.
Are you looking at one with self levelling suspension? It is a good idea to have that, not sure if it is standard now.
I would expect the mpg to be reasonable, the diesel engines are pretty good.
The XC90 weighs in at 2120kg and we tow 1900kg with the 2.4 diesel, we get an average 23mpg towing (automatic gearbox). So I would expect the V70 to do far better.
Hi Jim, I had the S60, same engine as the V70 and had no problems towing an Argente 540/4. The engines are bullet proof and have plenty of power and if looked after will last for ever. Mine had 83,000miles on it and the first thing I did was get the timing belt changed even though it wasn't due until 95000, for piece of mind really. Always wanted the V70 but ones I looked at when I was buying were out of my budget unfortunately.
Look on the Volvo owners forum, google it, and you will get all the info you need. Volvos are built like a tank as I found out when some little sc****g decided to dance all over mine last summer. Despite the footprints on the bonnet, roof and boot there was only slight damage to the roof. Other cars would have buckled under the weight of this guys antics.
Had an XC70 2.4t auto which was great. I think the max plated towing weight was about 2300kg. Didn't know the caravan was there at about 1240kg. I did end up with a large trailer at over 2000kg. There was plenty of power, but there was a little bit of tail wagging occasionally.
I ended up getting rid of it when the gearbox started to get a bit lumpy.
I've a 2.5D V70, its a 1999 (V plate) with a kerb weight of only 1415kg. Mines done 180,000 miles now and still runs clean and smooth.
The only issues I've had towing has been down to wet grass on an incline where the wheels tend to spin rather than grip. Other problem is pitching, no wagging, just pitching. Changed the dampers/shockers but didn't help much so have gone with a blade stabiliser to level it out, which works fine.
I've never done a MPG check, but get just under 600 miles to a tank (apprx 55 ltr) solo, less towing but dont know what, sorry.
Spares are expensive - £400 for a wing mirror, electric window switches £100 each, but theres been quite a few of them out there so brakers tend to have bits.
