£230 wasnt the fitted price though, Probably just a flywheel price, The actual fitted price maybe less than £50 difference.

Volkswagen wanted £800 to do the cambelt on my mums golf.

Your right it was £350 all in fitted .

£800 for a cam belt change, she was riped off big style

I had mine changed and a new metal water pump (the plastic ones give up shortly after a new belt is fitted)

it should have cost her no more than £200 mine was £244 but that included the pump

She can take the golf to a Seat or Skoda dealer as they all use the same engines and parts, a golf is actually skodas smaller brother

Buy an automatic. No DMF's on them!

Last automatic I had required 3 gearbox rebuilds in 70000 miles - and they are not cheap!

Fortunately it was a company vehicle on lease.

Very unusual for an auto to go wrong 3 times, let alone to do it in 70000 miles. Who rebuilt it? What car was it?

You do surprise me when you said Ford. It's not as if they are beginners to automatic gearboxes. I was expecting you to say Kia, Hyundai or some other Korean company.

I have known a few specialist engine rebuilders and specialist gearbox rebuilders though and nothing surprises me of some of them. Had you said a main agent had rebuilt the gearbox then that would have been another matter.
