Hi i have a zafira 20 dti 51 plate and iam confused as to what weight of caravan i can tow,on reading this site someone states 1050kg is based on all 7 seats used and 1500kg on 4 seats used. In a couple of weeks time i would like to use my car to tow a friends caravan to go to a local site for a couple of days .the caravan is a ABI NORTHSTAR which is a 4 berth wheeler.which looking on another caravan page this caravan is approx 1250kg. Please can someone help Thanks
I wanted a 2.0DTi Zafira but they do have a low max towing weight, the reasons I was given were poor engine cooling, and the floor and chassis structure due to the fold away rear seating. These were the reasons given to me and are not my reasons. This is why I chose a Vectra which had a higher tow spec. Check out towing capacities on Parkers.co.uk website
On checking Parkers, all early shape Zafira 2.0 DTi`s but one have a max. towing weight of 1050kg, the one being the Life with AC has a 1200kg max tow weight, there kerb weights vary from 1424kg to 1525kg. I have seen these Zafira`s towing vans that must be heavier, which is why I used to want one as we camp as well as caravan
Thought I would add to this as I know Zafira tow weight is a big issue.
I called Vauxhall today regarding tow capacity for my W reg 1.8 16V (115bhp) Elegance with A/C and sunroof. Max braked tow weight is 1300kg and nose weight is 75kg.
I would recommend anyone does this as every model and spec seems to be very different.
Internet gives the Kerbweight of your car as 1560Kg but check your handbook. That would give you a caravan with an MTPLM of 1326Kg for an 85% match.
4 Berth ABI Northstar is listed at 1600Kg but I suppose it depends which model and year. Check the plate on the caravan to see what its MTPLM is.
Then you also need to consider the max train weight of the car/caravan as set out in the handbook.
Consider the max noseweight of the van and car and ensure that the van can get down to the lower of the car or its tow ball.
Tell your insurers that you will be towing.

I had a Zafira 51 plate 2.0DTI as a company car - towing limit of 1050kg was confirmed by dealer. I did not have a van at the time but this stopped us buying one for a few years (I had the choice of an Seat Alhambra TDi and I chose the Vauxhall, not my finest hour!)
I heard the clutch was poor and not up to the job of towing, apparently the 2.2DTI (only available in Europe and never imported to the UK) had a higher tow limit.
Hi, we have just sold our Zafira because the manufacturers have put a towing limit on it and it was far too low to tow a caravan. Don't go by Whattotow.com with this car check your handbook or check with a main dealer. Each model and year are different.

Sorry to add to your woes - but we too hve also had to sell our Zafira as it wasn't suitable for towing... The caravan dealer I went to, checked the details on line for our car & advised us it would be illegal to tow with it... and we were only buying a Bailey Ranger 470/4... not exactly a big heavy van!
We had this problem of finding a suitable van .. our 1999 1.8 Elegance has a kerb weight of 1345kg..bringing the 85% match to 1143kg. Not much room for a choice of vans !.. Hope to change the car next year when we decide what to change to. But quite happy with the van.
