I have a 2003 1.6 picasso petrol and tow a 2 berth caravan with no problem at all(see pics on my profile), ok so i have to change gears more so what. Cant say about MPG have never botherd about it but tows lovely.
Plenty of older 4 berth caravans are well under your 900kg limit. This Eccles Topaz I've just sold had a maximum weight of 810kg and was fine for four people. A Sprite Alpine would be even lighter but a bit "cosy" for four. Alternatively you could get a two berth caravan and sleep the other two on an air bed in the awning.
