it does depend on the car northernj not all cars require a software upgrade.
i have fitted several towbars to new cars and none have necessitated any software upgrade to use them.
i have test driven a few cars that have had a "towing option", and al this does is put it into sport mode...i.e giving you a bit more performance for a heavy load.
best bet is to go an find a forum specific to your car and ask other likeminded owners of the same car.
