has anyone towed with one of these ile be towing an abbey county unladed weight 1040 max 1270kg the car will do it ive checked with the manufacterer this time (due to earlier c*ck up) so just checking this time
I'll chip in before you get all the Anti-Renault folk on the thread, only a few of whom have actually towed with one.
I had a Megane 1.5dci that towed out previous trailer tent (600kgs) and this towed an absolute treat. I now pull our Bailey 500/5 (1271kgs, but weighbridge checked at 1250'ish laden) with a Grand Scenic 1.9 dci and it performs admirably. Economy obviously drops (I won't quote figures as your hatch will perform better than my huge tug), but apart from a slight struggle on big gradients the Scenic works well for us, so I'd have no reason to doubt your Megane.
As a side issue, there's a lot of confusion over weight limits with Renault cars generally. I spoke with Renault direct and obtained a letter confirming that the tow limit isn't variably (which is the mis-conception), the only previso obviously being not to exceed train-weight, car gross weight and rear axle limits; as if any sensible tourer would anyway.
I am not anti Renault, I had two Scenics one 1.6 petrol Grand and a 1.9dci standard one, and I will state straight off that they were two of the most reliable cars I have owned. The diesel towed our Ranger too.
However, their towing weights are quoted Driver only. I also had the same conversation with Renault uk re towing more than 950kg so long as you do not exceeding the gtw, but we were upgrading to a 1250kg mtplm caravan and this left us less than 300kg payload allowance for the car, around half the max amount. The car had to go
Granted the op's caravan is towable by a megane, but there are other cars that will not restrict your payload so much.
According to Renault the car will do it - According to practical caravan quoting Renault max tow is 1432 kg (120bhp) but if you adopt the 85% of kerb weight the recommended tow is 1079kg.In my view it is a little bit on the light side but Having had a 1.9 Scenic some years ago I would say it would have adequate power.
I am not anti- Renault at all. My Scenic was great except the main agent cocked up a gearbox repair and all the gears dropped out in the eurotunnel car park. Not Renault's fault really but it is a fact the more recent Renaults are not viewed favourably in the trade, suffering with reliabilityElectricity issues.
When I had a 1.9dci Scenic, it towed fine (MTPLM 1176 Kg) - it was just a shame that its unreliability involved 30 visits to the dealers for repairs in its first 3 years. You name it, it went wrong - airbags, ventilation system, electric parking brake, electric mirrors, automatic headlights and so on.....

The 'Anti-Renault' was tongue-in-cheek guys as I've entered this debate before on here and other forums and it's amusing when pressed, most responses are from folk who've had no experience of Renaults whatsoever. I will offer advice only when I've direct experience of a tow-car, or if the question is completely obvious ("...will my Honda Jazz pull and Hobby" etc)
I reckon we've spoken with different reps at Renault. The two I spoke with admitted the 'quote with driver' weights were incorrect and the letter I have (which I'll post if I can scan) advises I can tow upto the full 1300kgs providing the other weights are observed ie., GTW, cars gross etc.
Additionally, I'm not pro-Renault either and don't dispute there are arguable more reliable choices of tow-car available; however my Scenic has been excellent (perhaps against the norm experienced) and I'm happy to defend the cars questionable reputation ... for the time being.
