All you need the check is that the towball part is clean and free from paint or rust, wirewool is pretty good at cleaning them but wipe the ball over with a paper towel to remove any dust. Doing this will protect the pads in the staberlising head and prevent them get glazed thus becoming less effective.

replace the towball bolts when fitting at only a quid each it is worth it just incase the threads have become stretched

in use the alko ball can become a wee bit rusty, i clean mine before each trip with wet and dry rough grade then polish it with a fine grade before giving a good spray and wipe with either meths or brake cleaner
