Hi

Got a chance of getting a new Toyota Avensis 2.0L Diesel through car leasing at work. I was looking at the 5 door tourer. Has anynoe towed with them? it has a kerb weight of 1600KG and 125BHP which are more than my Mondeo 2.0 115BHP Tdci.

What do you think?

The latest shape have decent towing limits at last, old ones were woefully low for such a capabable car, so it should be a superb tow car. The lease company might insist on a factory tow bar & that could cost a packet.

Hi,

We have a new Avensis Tourer 2.2 diesel which we use to tow our Eccles Moonstone which has MTPLM of 1550kg and it is great. We used to have a Hilux truck so we were a bit aprehensive at going to the Avensis but it tows really well. Any worries we had have gone completely and even the boot space is fine despite us having two boys who like to take a vast amount of footballs, cricket bats etc. everywhere we go! I appreciate the Mondeo is well tried and tested as a towcar but do think the Avensis is certainly a competitor for it.

I have an 2009 Toyota Avensis Tourer Diesel 2.0 TR model, kerb weight 1,520kg, towing weight 1,600kg

We mainly tow a 2010 Bailey Ranger GT60 MTPLM 1,326 kg

Both units tow great, normal fuel consumption 45mpg, towing 36mpg

The Avensis has a huge boot space and totaly reliable, only thing to get used to is the push button hand brake but works well.Try to get the TR model which has many extras.

Hi

Yes i did see that the tr avnsis was loaded with toys. I like the idea of the rear veiw camera.  \can you use it to hitch up. What type of towbar have you got on it, I have and older caravan and use the leaf type stabaliser.

Hi Iain

I do not use the camera for hitching up, I have the wife., much more reliable!

We had a problem with the tow bar in as much as we have two caravans, one down South with the twin plugs and the new one (in Northumberland) with a single 13 pin plug, so we had to have two sockets fitted to our Avensis Tourer car.

It is not a problem as you can get an adapter for the single 13pin socket to connect to the two older sockets on the car, But the adapter is a pain in the A--- as it increases the total cable length and makes it heavy, the sooner we get rid of it the better.

However our south caravan has a 'Scot Stabilizer' (leaf type) and we fitted the drop plate on the Avensis for this, and it tows and handles very well.

BUT in certain angled positions 'without the caravan' attached the bottom of the drop plate can catch the road, so we currently have it removed.

My answer to our problem is we are going to replace the South caravan probably with a Bailey Pageant Burgundy and will make sure we have a modern Alko stabalizer already fitted, so we will not need a drop plate.

If I can help further just ask

Mike

I think its a brilliant looking car. Especially the tourer. Can't help with towing capability I am afraid.
