Hi
we are off to france soon and taking a 12 hour ferry crossing. we have twin electrics, will the caravan drain our car battery whilst its on the ferry or does it only run whilst the car engine is running??

If wired properly the van will not run on 12volt with the engine off.

If unsure you could always unplug it.

The fridge will not work when the car engine is turned off. However, for a 12 hour crossing I would unplug the van; I would also wind the jockey wheel down to take the strain off the car suspension (just remember to connect again and wind up jockey wheel before you set off again.

Some of the voltage sensing split charging relays stick from time to time, so disconnecting the 12s is a wise precaution.
