We have a Citroen Xantia 2000 model diesel automatic as above, and the manufacturers handbook says that the towing limit is 900KG, although all other models in this range have a towing limit of 1200KG.

This is considerably less than 85% of the unladen weight of the vehicle which is 1336KG. In fact the manufacturers handbook says that the towing limit in France for this model is 1200KG!

Does anyone know why the towing limit is so small in this vehicle?

And can anyone suggest a suitable caravan - there are only 2 of us, but I have limited mobility - which would match our car. We are looking for something secondhand, probably about 12-15 years old, costing about £2000 max.

The low towing limit is probably due to cooling issues, may be worth finding a Citroen forum to see if there is a problem.

A light van? See if you can find a Lunar Arriva ( i think was called), the age is about right, it was slightly narrower than the norm but well equipped for its age/price and very light. You will still need to load carefully (MIRO of the van was I believe 828kgs), but should be possible.

I have a 52 plate Citroen Xsara 2 litre diesel automatic. The max tow for that is 1100 Kgs, not sure why the Xantia is so much less. It's a great towcar.

I used to have a 1994 Bailey Oakmere (dealer special version of the Beachcomber) and the MTPLM was only 816 Kgs. The Xsara towed it like a dream. Sold it last year, but there are plenty about and they will cost you well under 2K.

It was a cracking little van, all mod cons, and although only 11 feet long it didn't feel cramped because it was normal caravan width.
