Lastweek as we were going on holiday towing caravan at 60mph my mazda 5 2.o diesel DPF light started flasing next minute whole car cut out, managed to stop, aa came out managed to get us all back home safely. anyway car now been in garage for a week needs a complete new dpf filter at a cost of £1500 without any labour charges. i have a suzuki warrent where i bought the car last december as usual they carried out tests and said it was not covered, now waiting on mazda to see they will pay some of the costs. what a nightmare, anyone else had problems whith the dpf filter? when i first got the car the dpf light was flasing took it to mazda who switched off light at no cost.
nightmare! I suspect when the "nice" mazda man switched the light off all he did was clear the error codes, what was actually happening was the car picking up impending failure of the DPF, or at least it working outside acceptable parameters.
Anyway, solving the issue, on what grounds have the warranty people said it's not covered?
you haven't said what age the car is, mileage and importantly from the point of view of getting mazda to stump up has it been serviced as per spec?
We had a mazda 6 diesel from new and the dpf light was on when we got it. Car had new injectors, numerous other bits and pieces then the power seemed to drop off and wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. seemed to rattle 'low'down' in the engine as well. It wouldn't pull until the revs were right up,hadn't been used for towing had full mazda service history and I got fed up with it in the end and got shut.
DPF are a nightmare! The idea is that diesel particles are filtered out, right?
Now comes the catch:the filter can reach (depending on the use of the vehicle)it´s NORMAL end of live within 100 000km or less!
So,warranty say:sorry, that´s normal wear and tear!
The manufacturers won´t say that out loud, but the whole idea of DPF is (at the current stage of technology)bullsh*t.
In the Semi (I think you call them HGV)industry, the same problem persists, but the filter are serviceble,in a special oven, dealerships can burn them out. This had just to be done on my Peterbuild dump truck,87000 km and the DPF is plugged solid.
Flashing PDF light means, that the filter has nearly reached it´s maximum capacity, ones the light is on solid, the filter is toast...
My sympathy to you
If so you can remove the exhaust and the DPF, he will then cut the seam around it, then get a hammer and chisel and remove the inners, then re weld it then you need someone with a laptop and lead to dial out the DPF sensor
Check out the Mazda forums
Skoda owners do this and they pass the MOT without any problems
Basically if you have DPF problems like the light coming it could be just a faulty sensor or a broken wire going to it, to keep the DPF clear, take the car and thrash it in second for about a mile this burns off the soot build up from to many short journeys, due to the car not getting hot enough, and always get the DPF fluid top up
I too have a 2007 Mazda 5 2.o diesel ( 3 1/2 weeks out of warrenty ) DPF light started flashing, engine warning light came on together with traction control light. Car was in Mazda dealer for nearly 4 weeks waiting for a good will gesture from Mazda.Car needs a new dpf filter and one new injector at a cost of £2150. Mazda have offered to pay 25% of total.
a DPF filter as has been said filters the soot particles and stores then in the filter. the filter has a sensor at both end and can determine how blocked it is, when it reaches a certain amount of blockage it regenerates itself with out the driver even being aware, to regenerate itself the engine needs to meet certain conditions hot engine, high engine speed high road speed and drive time, all it does it pump extra fuel in to increase combustion chamber temps which then burns off the soot blocking the filter, but
NOW there are problems with the above the main one is when the cars are mainly used around town and citys and never gets up to a good speed for the car to initiate regeneration, the second is 6 speed gearboxes!!!!! why u may think, as i said it needs the right engine speed too which is usually 2500-3500 rpm now on a motorway or dual carrage way when ya in 6th gear at 50-60 mph the engine speed isnt high enough for the car to regenerate itself.
the DPF light will do one of 2 things tay on or flash.
if it stays on you can activate regeneration by driving in a high gear at high speed for 15-20 mins which should do the trick.
but if the light starts to flash or was flashing then the car cant do its own regeneration, the dealer can do a forced regeneration with dedicated equipment but depending on how bad the blockage is sometimes a new DPF is the only way
one other thing especially for mazda owners and some other makes. make sure when u get your car serviced that the fuel additive tank is also topped up, you wont even know your car has it but some manufactures add an additive into the fuel the aid combustion and DPF clearing. most main dealers will do this anyway but if u get you car serviced at a independant they may not do this
