we have a detachable tow ball we have just brought our caravan home it never snaked but pitched up and down tyre pressures ok another caravan user told us that we need to roughen up the toe ball with sandpaper and it will ok is this correct happy
You don't roughen it up, you just take the paint off. That is if you have a stabiliser hitch. If not, the ball should be greased. Was the noseweight correct? Is teh caravan a good match with the car?

.... it.... pitched up and down.......
As greendemon suggested, ball should be clean, and above all dry if you have Alko stabiliser coupling head, otherwise greased.
Pitching probably caused by 'noseweight' being too low. Noseweight should be between 4% and 7% of the weight of your van, but not exceeding 'max drawbar loading' figure for your vehicle.
