Hi all.

We have a new to us car which has a towbar with 12n and 12s but does not appear to have the voltage switching relay to run the fridge and charger when towing.

Does anybody know if the part i need is called a smartcom as sold by towsure for £13.35 and is it easy to fit?

The car is Audi a6 avant 2.0 tdi s-line manual.

Thanks in advance for the help i know i will recieve.

Its possible the car might just need a software update at your Audi garage. If the car is fairly recent & has a dedicated loom for towbar it is often the case that fridge pin(6 on 12s)is not powered without the update.

This might not be the case as dedicated loom is usually 13pin but certainly worth checking.

Hi Tentz.

Thanks for your swift reply.

The towbar is a non genuine possibly towsure/ towequipe set up. I have the 12v permanent feed going through on pin 2 ok. No reading at all for fridge and charger which makes me think there should be a switching relay so that they are only powered when the car is running and putting out the correct voltage to power them. ie not draining the car battery on tick over.

If you have a permanent feed on Pin 2, your car's S socket is wired up for a pre 1999 caravan - see here (disregard the fact that it's a Volvo diagram);

You'll need to locate the wiring under the bonnet, usually a thickish red wire with an inline fuse attached to the pos side of the battery. The relay is about the size of a match box.

The switching to battery charge and fridge supply only takes place when the relay detects a load, it can take upto a minute with the engine running before the relay activates.

Hope this helps a bit.

Rob

It is still possible that a specific for car plug in loom has been used even tho the towbar was not dealer fitted, you need to establish whether this the case. There have been posts on here before about new & newish Audis being supplied without without fridge pin being powered.

If you look on Towequipe website here it does say summat about an extra part being required to power fridge with their specific loom. It is 13pin but it could have been changed to 12n/12s
