Hi everyone, well we today bought a Hyundai tucson, very excited, as once we have it and have a towbar we can go looking at our first caravan! The dealers wanted £550 for a towbar, is that expensive? Where are the best places to go to get a towbar fitted as Im afraid I dont know anything about this being new to caravanning. (We live in Hampshire, not far from Portsmouth). many thanks

Try the Towequipe website.

They not only sale towbars etc etc but they have mobile fitters.

Main dealer will always be the dearest option. Towequipe are ok but phone round your local fitters. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=towbar+fitters+portsmouth&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8&rlz=1I7DKUK_en&redir_esc=&ei=R9ylTeW3Osuz8QPz1sS5Dw

they are all much the same and any towbat will be type approved. They will also give you options on flange, swan neck or detachable. That depends on what you want it to look like.

Main dealers are always the most expensive and the point is that on many occasions they will contract the work out anyway to a professional towbar fitter. Who pays the middle man? Of course the customer does so avoid the main dealer altogether and get quotes else where. There are plenty of ways to search for companies that deal in towing equipment etc. You can use a search engine on the internet, Yellow Pages or even a caravan service agent for advice. All you have to do then is tell them if you want a detachable or flange type towball fitting as the detachable will cost more then when you have decided that, then you have to decide if you want 13 pin electrics fitted or the old twin black & grey 7 pin sockets fitted. If you decide on a flange type towbar you probably will need an Alko type towball fitted if your caravan has an Alko hitch so there's a lot to consider first as well as the price.

Can anyone offer advice, I have a 6 month old Brink detachable towbar, and been used only a handfull of times I am getting quite deep vertical scoring down the tow ball, mainly front and back. Any thoughts on the cause and how serious is this . the van is a new Bailey Unicorn Seville. Thanks

Stabiliser hitch? Contaminated friction pads?

Non stabiliser hitch? Lack of grease or contaminated grease.

Ask dealer if they have a list of approved towbar fitters. Their work should be covered by vehicle warranty. If you get towbar fitted by a random(ie cheapest)fitter then any towbar related problems will not be under vehicle warranty & you would have to hope fitters' warranty was ok.

If the car is new, it will probably need a dedicated loom, this could cost £200+cost of towbar+labour.
