I have read all the info on this subject from various clubs and sources and noted that my existing towing mirrors which are the "suck-it-and-see" type bought 4 years ago which work like a dream, don't have any E markings on them.
Went to Discover Leisure last weekend and had a look at all the ranges and found that even the NEW "suck-it-and-see" ones on sale still do not have E-markings. although the outer box does say they are E approved! This is really strange to my view as every other towing mirror on sale had the E stampings on the plastic somewhere but not these.
I am in a real quandary now as I really like these mirrors as you can adjust them using the internal car window adjusted (in my car electronically) to get a perfect view.
Can anyone shed any light on this and let me know if using these unmarked ones is technically still OK - my car is a 2003 X trail by the way.

That's exactly the way I read the articles on the regs as well Tony! However I don't understand it at all as if the problem is lack of safety glass which won't shatter into a millions shards of glass then why should "old" ones be allowed?? Strange!
Actually I have proved mind don't shatter on impact as the other week I dropped one from the car window when fitting and all that happened was the glass just popped out - it was quite a good test! Have super-glued it back in now.

At the end of the day who the ruddy hell is going to check for e markings on a mirror!!!
...... and if some sad jobsworth ex train announcer copper or dvla womble does pick up the error due to him digesting every piece of worthless rubbish that comes from brussells good luck to him/her!!! i would pay just to challenge them!!!
As I can't find any e-markings on my towcar (2003 X trail) fitted mirrors I presume that as my towing mirrors also have none, I am OK by the current legislation. I am pleased about that as I really like the Suck it & See type.
The ruling you mentioned about e-marked mirrors being allowed to stick out a further 5cm than the caravan width compared to non e-marked ones looks like more daft EU rules!
