Hi everyone, I have a caravan sited on a seasonal pitch at the moment, but next season want to give touring a try, so can anyone give me some advice please....The caravan is an Abbey 212 GTS (1994), and the car I have is a Peugeot 207S (has 90bhp)....Would my car tow the caravan? I am new to this and wondered if anyone can give me any advice, thankyou
The Club advises that a Peugeot 207 1.4 HDi 90 S (2006) should not tow an Abbey GTS 212 (1993)
2 Kerbweight ratio: 97%
The caravan's laden weight is close to the car's kerb weight, increasing the risk of stability concerns. This outfit should not be driven by novice towers, and does not meet Club guidelines. Note that a small increase in ratio (to perhaps 90%) is acceptable if all other criteria are passed.
3 Towing limit ratio: 121%
The caravan's laden weight is over the car's towing limit, which the Police may consider unroadworthy and which may invalidate the car’s insurance. It is not usually practical to lightly load the caravan to mitigate this issue.
3 Gross train weight ratio: 107%
The sum of the car and the caravan’s fully laden weights exceeds the car’s gross train weight. There is significant risk of the car’s GTW being exceeded in use, which would be illegal, and thus this combination is not recommended.
3 Nose weight ratio: 177%
The car’s nose weight is significantly too low to safely tow the caravan. To achieve an acceptable nose weight for the car, there would be a real risk of the caravan then having insufficient nose weight to ensure adequate high speed stability.
2 BHP per ton : 35
The car's engine power is quite low to tow this caravan. It may be sluggish and uncomfortable on hills or at junctions.
Consider part exchanging the car for a 307 Diesel if you like Peugeot , it will be more economical and should be a much better match when towing . Auto is best but there will be a small cost in extra fuel . Auto will also make starting on hills and manouvering so much easier for you if you are fresh to towing .
Id buy a second car an old diesel est with a towbar already on it, proberbly for the same price of a towbar and just use it for the purpose you intend.
