Hi all, I have a similar problem to Sally Garratt. I need a vehicle which has a high up driving position because my better half cannot get in or out of low cars due to back trouble.
I would like an auto diesel, on a 04/5 plate that has good fuel consumption, to tow a Bailey Ranger 500/5 1997 1149kg. I have been trawling the net but just when i think i have found the right car, it is either manual diesel or auto petrol, or the fuel consumption is poor.
I am getting a bit desparate now, so if anyone has any ideas, please help me out.
Is 1149 the unladen weight? Pages i found say the max laden weight is 1300kg.
What is your budget? Requirements and preferences?
High driving position your looking at MPV's galaxy etc or 4x4's. None of which will have brilliant fuel consumption.
Mate bought a japanese import forget the name but it has 8 seats which slide and swivel in every direction, Electric everything and twin sun ports and twin aircon, Video entertainment system. But £8000 for a 15 year old vehicle.
Cherokee, Hilux, Shogun/Pajero, Galaxy, L200, Trajet, 807, Landcruiser, Espace, Sedona, Granvia, Sharan, Bongo, Zafira etc. But you do need to watch the towing limits some auto's are much lower.
I think you will be struggling rich to find a car to do all those things at once.Ive got back probs too and ive got a shogun at present.I have traded it in for a new grand picasso 2ltr and its brill. You can pick them up quite cheap second hand and its higher than a car.Dont know just yet about towing weights but that dosent bother me as i dont tour anymore..
Grampian91 is right the max laden weight is 1275kg, as for a towcar that's higher up good on fuel and strong enough to tow your Caravan i'd recommened the following car
Ford Focus c-max 2.0 tdci
136 bhp
320 nm of torque
1500kg Towing capability
We have had ours for about a month and i can't praise it enough, you only need to look up reviews for this car's towing ability to see for yourself how good it really is..
We had a trial run with our Van, also a Bailey Ranger 500/5 and it towed like a dream really punchy with the torque when needed and cruised along nice on the motorway, we got 32-35 mpg towing and about 45-50 solo, on a 04/05 plate your looking around the 4k-4.5k for one with low miles and service history..
Zafira, Alhambra, Galaxy, or Sharan diesel Auto.
We have had a Zafira, and only changed to the Sharan for the extra weight, and have been happy with both.
If you do not need a 4x4, do not get one. Extra weight equals less mpg.

we have the 500/5 bailey and tow with a hyundai santa f'e V6 auto and its great no problem at all apart from the petrol cost of 17 MPG on tow.if interested in good MPG the diesel is better.ours is 1272 KGS.MTPLM.
Thanks for all you're comments folks, at the moment we have a Ford C-max 2ltr diesel manual which does tow well, but my wife needs an auto, and she canot get on with the electronic handbrak and we would like a bit bigger car, so i guess i will have to keep looking.
