going from newcastle to bunree in on august 13th, but what is the best route?
CC routeplanner says A68, A8, M9, A84 which seems a longer way round to me (edinburgh, stirling etc) however the AA routeplanner says A69 to carlisle, M6, A74 (through Glasgow), which is the way i would have thought to have gone.
has anyone done any of these routes, and is there any preference between them.
we would also have 2 dogs so need to stop off for half an hour or so.
thanks for reading, and look forward to your replies.
regards,
simon.
------------- just cos you got the power, that don`t mean you got the right...
It is 6 miles further going through Glasgow. I have driven at various times all the route that goes through Edinburgh and Stirling and it is a pleasant drive all the way and will not holdyou up as a caravanner, it also takes you through Callander and past Killin avoiding the road alongside of Loch Lomond north of Tarbet that some people seem not to like ( personally I prefer the drive up through Tarbet to going through Callander ). The A69 route gets you onto a lot of motorway and dual carriage ways as oposed to the scenic but very adequate single carriageways of the Edinburgh route. Not a lot of difference really.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
I'm just outside Glasgow and we going to Bunree on 20th August and we will be travelling via Stirling route instead of Loch Lomond. I'm not a good traveller on winding roads!

That is why I go up past Loch Lomond rather than Callander. To me the 8 miles of windy road north of Tarbet are far preferable than the long and winding road from Callander to Killin.

the A A route is the way we took when coming back from bunree to s/land last year, stopped off at moffat for 2 days to brake the journey,if you just want to stop for a short time you could stop at moffat and go to the woollen mill, this is what the coach company,s use or use the motorway services in that area 2 or 3 in that area.
Don't even think of using the A68. It is slow and winding and you will use 50 gallon (slight exageration) getting over Carter Bar.
If you get behind something slow you will be there until you get to Edinburgh.
When travelling north from Newcastle I usually use the A697 from Morpeth and join the A68 at Carfraemill, well on your way towards Edinburgh. However, the A1 is usually OK at weekends and does have some decent stretches north of the border. It also has more stopping places eg Purdy Lodge (no connection) near Belford.
However, as you live in the North East, you will know how poor the roads north are so you really just have to take pot luck.
The A69 can also be a pain once you pass Hexham.
Don't worry if you get it wrong, hundreds of people travelling these routes have to make these decisions every day - the route that was perfect last week can be a nightmare today.
However, when you eventually get there, it is fabulous
