Hi Folks,

I have a 59 Plate Mazda 6 Estate 2.2 Diesel Estate which I think is going to be man enough to pull my newly aquired 1255 -1475kg Ace Tristar.

My question-; I'm planning on a Witter (invisible) Detachable Towbar with Twin Electrics and feel pretty confident that once the bumper and boot trim are off, I'll be able to fit the towbar and car specific 7pin kit. I've done the towbar on a Laguna Estate before now, but that didn't require a bumper removal.

Has anyone fitted a Mazda 6 Estate towbar? Must the bumper come off? I had a little go at removing the trim in the boot to then release the 'light cluster' but didn't know how the trim itself was secured and didn't want to force anything. The 'boot shut panel' also has a couple of screws beneath that need removing but again I didn't wasnt to force the 'shut panel' without knowing how it was secured. Anyone able to tell me?

It might be a case of getting a (Norwich based) mobile fitter out to (hopefully) do the job properly. My local Indespension garage was mentioned my a friend but I gather I'll part with £500 there.

Any help, experience would be appreciated.

John.

There is a web page you can go to to give full instructions on how to fit a tow bar to your Mazda or any other make of car. I put what I thought would be a complicated fit on my Jag last year but it turned out quite easy, even the electrics with its relay computer system.Someone may be able to tell you which site it is as I forget.

I have a 59 plate 6 estate and had a witter detachable towbar fitted professionally. The bumper was removed and part of the metalwork behind it was not put back, I have it in my garage.

Thanks TomtomFan. Do you remember how much it cost? I think I'm leaning towards getting it fitted professionally.

If it's what I think it is then it was put behind the bumper for a reason!

Same as our Mazda 5, hubby is a mechanic but he still got it fitted. We used Suffolk Towbars as they do all the works ones and it was about £300.

Thanks folks. All sorted now. Got the full monty done at Indespension. Detachable/13pin - dedicated wiring kit - no Scotchlocks. Was expensive but am happy with it. I think it took them 4.5hrs to fit. Think it would have taken me days.

PS. You all probably know this, but Indespension sell a very neat Y shaped adapter from 13pin to Twin electrics for about £30. It's fantastic. Beats the Y lead version thats been around for years. Ta.

Er, we've just experienced the same thing on our recent fitting. I'm worried that this might have compromised the car's safety. The fitter didn't tell me that he'd taken anything off the car and I'm not sure if he's put anything in its place. Is this a common practice?
