Not towed with one, but worked on and driven loads. good solid car, great build quality, and an excellent tow car, go for it.

Yes, good tow car (particularly with the sports suspension), make sure it is a 170 model not a 140 as the 2005/6 ones were a reliability disaster and could end up costing a fortune to put right.

The 170s don`t have the same problems, but its still worth checking out the electronic handbrake (mine was crap) and checking the rear tyres for `saw-tooth` wear (buggers up the tyres, needs expensive 4-wheel tracking and makes it sound like a wheel bearing has gone).

I get to thinking that the older B5 is more reliable than the new version.  My old 03 plate 130TDI PD has covered 157K and since it was first registered in 03, all its had is a battery, a radiator and a coolant temperature sensor. (pluss service items obviously)Its also still on the origonal factory clutch. Mine gets abused, im an ex mechanic so i hate messing with cars nowadays, that includes my own, the only time i lift the bonnet on my car is to top-up the washer bottle!

The other day, i thought i'd better check the engine oil using the dipstick instead of relying on the light like ive done for the last 5 years that ive owned it. Well, i neednt have worried since the oil level on the stick was still on the upper mark where it was when i changed it 10'000 miles and 2 years ago!How many other cars can do that i wonder? Yes, a change is iniment i hasten to add.

Oh, tyres? Tyres seem to last forever, i dont get any anoying feathering on the fronts, rear or anything else.

Totally agree with Gary H.

We still have a B5 model (an ex company car of mine) which OH has had for 5 years now. Very economical, goes like stink, uses no oil (165K on the clock), tows superb, no rattles or squeaks (unlike the newer one). Would definately recommend one.

Ours is now ready to go as she now does so little mileage and that is all solo so something smaller is needed, but it is without question the best car I have ever had.
