Most cars struggle if they are reasonably powerfull and have (as most cars) huge wheels with low profile tyres. 4x4 is ok for going but stopping can still be exciting!

My wifes car has big alloys and low profiles, so we bought a set of steels and put winter tyres on them. I swap them over in Nov/Dec and leave them on until the end of March.

My Mondeo with 16" full winter tyres is far better in the snow than my previous 4007 4x4 with 16" M+S tyres,the 4007 was completely hopeless with 19" summer tyres fitted even in 4x4 lock mode & as audicab26 says stopping was very scary.

A 4x4 with summer tyres gives you a false sence of security, starting off is OK, but once you are moving just hold on tight braking is no better than a standard car.
